Charming con man Harold Hill has made a living promising to teach children how to play in a band, collecting payment first, then skipping town before he is discovered. Things seem no different in River City, Iowa, until he falls for the town librarian, who rightly suspects that his silver-tongued gift is more of a curse. Filled with familiar tunes, such as “Seventy-six Trombones,” “Trouble,” and “Till There Was You,” this delightful Tony Award-winning musical will have you humming all the way home.
Guest Director Andrew F. Holtz says, "While 'The Music Man' is basically a love story full of terrific songs and dances, it is also a reaffirmation that music, dance, theater and literature have always been an integral part of the fabric of our community—as intrinsically American as baseball, mom and apple pie."
Holtz has a special connection to the musical, having grown up about four blocks from the home of Colonel C.G. Conn, the founder of Conn Band Instruments and the person upon whom Meredith Willson based Harold Hill. Holtz's family history also makes "The Music Man" a natural fit. His grandfather played in big bands and his great-grandfather, who knew C.G. Conn, played in John Philip Sousa's band and helped invent the sousaphone.
