Candy may be dandy, but on Valentine?s Day an even better way to get your sweetie in the mood is take her dancing. More specifically, to the Sweetheart Valentine?s Dance presented by the Tucson Jazz Society at the J.W. Marriott Starr Pass Resort, 3800 W. Starr Pass Blvd., on Saturday, Feb. 13 at 7 p.m.

Big Band Express is taking over the bandstand, 16 swinging musicians led by drummer/singer Tom Patrick, with “In the Mood” on their playlist. They've got the charts for all those other classic dance favorites from the big band era, as well.

The band?s resume includes centerpiece gigs at the Oro Valley Jazz Festival, the Tubac Arts Festival, Tucson's own Silver & Turquoise Ball and many New Year's Eve blowouts at the Tucson Convention Center.

Standing out front of this good time machine is Crystal Stark, the bright-eyed singer known for her enthusiastic delivery of hits from the rock, blues and soul genres. She was one of the finalists in the fifth season of TV?s “American Idol.”

Together, the big band and the singer will fill the Starr Pass ballroom with great dance music from the past 60 years. To get everyone started off on the right foot, DANZON! School of Dance will present a swing dance demonstration and offer a free dance lesson at 7 p.m.

So polish up those dancing shoes and get a romantic corsage for your date. Since Saturday is Valentine?s Eve, it's a great chance to stretch Valentine?s Day into a 36-hour celebration.

Fixed price dinners are available at the resort?s Primo Restaurant and Signature Grill, with complimentary champagne. The dining rooms, including Catalina BBQ Company, open at 5 p.m. There are drink specials and free chocolate truffles after the show at Primo.

Sweetening the opportunity for a getaway weekend and Valentine?s Sunday, ticket holders for the Sweetheart Dance also qualify for a special room rate of $159 plus taxes. These TJS overnighters will also get a 20 percent discount on the resort?s golf and spa treatments.

Tickets are $25 non-members, $20 TJS members, with seating at tables for 10. More intimate VIP tables for two are $125 general public, $100 for TJS members.
