Tucson, Arizona--
Pima Community College Performing Arts Department presents Anything Goes, a high-energy tap dancing classic American screwball comedy. Music and lyrics are by Cole Porter with book by Guy Bolton, P.G. Wodehouse, Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse. Brought to the stage by the creative team of Todd Poelstra, Mickey Nugent, David Waggoner, Dr. Mark Nelson, Maryann Trombino and a large, incredibly talented group of student actors, singers, dancers and musicians. A preview performance on Wednesday, February 23 at 7:30 p.m. will begin the show’s two-week run. An opening night celebration – Bon Voyage! is planned for Thursday, February 24 at 7:30 p.m. Patrons of all ages are encouraged to come dressed in their best cruise attire (for all situations—dinner with the captain, deck wear, sightseeing gear, etc.). Several prizes will be awarded. A reception and photo opportunities with the cast are planned. Sign language interpreters will be available for the Wednesday, March 2 performance and scholarship benefit night.

Anything Goes is set aboard the S. S. American traversing from New York to London. The ship’s passengers include a crazy mix of characters—Moonface, a gangster on the run posing as a minister; Reno, a former evangelist turned nightclub singer and her tap-dancing "Angels"; Hope, an heiress with her English gentleman fiancé Sir Oakleigh; and Hope’s ex-boyfriend Billy (a stow-away on the boat trying to win her back). Also onboard is Moonface’s gun-toting friend, Bonnie, posing as a missionary; Billy’s boss Mr. Whitney; a pair of Chinese card sharks; and Hope’s mother Mrs. Harcourt. An abundance of knee-slapping one-liners and a series of comical mistaken identities transpire as the passengers and crew of the S.S. American sing and dance their way across the Atlantic, leaving nothing but laughs in its wake.

Porter wrote what is thought to be his greatest score of this period, “Anything Goes” in 1934. Its songs include the unforgettable favorites You’re the Top; Bon Voyage; It’s Delovely; I Get a Kick Out of You; Let’s Misbehave; Blow, Gabriel, Blow; along with the title song. The production script follows the 1962 Broadway revival that was nominated for ten Tony Awards and won for Best Revival of a Musical and Best Choreography.

“Anything Goes,” the ninth PCC musical production directed by Poelstra, taps into the choreography skills of Nugent, musical direction of Waggoner, the experience of pit orchestra conductor Dr. Mark Nelson and the clever costume designs of Maryann Trombino. Poelstra comments, “With its 2011 Broadway Revival scheduled to open in the April, ‘Anything Goes’ proves to be still vital 77 years after the original 1934 production. Cole Porter created a madcap collision with his sophisticated score and bawdy, irreverent lyrics set against the Marx Brothers-style antics of gangsters, show girls and upper crust passengers on a transatlantic luxury liner. According to director Poelstra “Anything Goes” set the standards for musical comedies. The story; all about the universal theme of love—true love, new love and risqué love; is what makes this show just as relevant to today as it was in Porter’s time.”
