“An Evening of ‘The Carol Burnett Show’” Brings Comedy Sketches to Stage

Ironwood Ridge High School performance features teacher, staff and student actors.

Some of the most memorable character sketches from television’s “The Carol Burnett Show” return in a one-night performance by teachers, staff and students of Ironwood Ridge High School.

The Jan. 28, 2011 performance honors the genius of Carol Burnett, a pioneer of sketch comedy whose 11-year-old television show won 27 Emmy and eight Golden Globe awards.

Sixteen skits bring back to life the poignant Old Folks Molly and Bert, self-centered Zelda and hapless George, dedicated Fireside Girl scout Alice Pourtney and the soapy cast of “As the Stomach Turns.”

Imagined “remakes” of MGM classics and a different take on the Bonnie and Clyde legend are among some of the other sketches.

From 1967 to 1978, Burnett’s weekly CBS program presented hilarious skits with fellow comedians Tim Conway, Vicki Lawrence, Harvey Korman and Lyle Waggoner and dozens of guest stars.

Ironwood Ridge High School’s troupe for this performance features 14 teachers and staff members, including unlikely actors tapped from math, biology and chemistry classrooms. Students from intermediate and advanced drama classes also will perform.
