Who could have guessed when we first embarked on the Barrio Stories Project two years ago that it would lead to such an incredible city-wide collaborative process.

  • Tucson Unified School District is bussing in over 1000 high school and middle school students enrolled in Culturally Relevant Curriculum classes thanks to the efforts of TUSD governing board members Kristel Foster, Cam Juarez, and CRC directors Maria Federico-Brummer and Lorenzo Lopez.
  • Our scenic design became a significant class assignment for two scenic design classes at Pima Community College West Campus thanks to our scenic designer and Pima instructor, Wesley Creigh.
  • Established organizations like Los Decendientes del Precidio de Tucson, YWCA of Southern Arizona, and Cholla High School Drama Department are providing the bulk of the 75 extras needed for the production.
  • TPAC 2015 Lumie Award winner Linda Cato's art students at Changemaker High School are making all the signage and 1000 paper flowers for Barrio Stories.

Help us make Barrio Stories a 100% Donation Based Event

We are working round the clock to make sure everyone who wants to see Barrio Stories, can do so without any financial obstacles. This is why we have started an Indiegogo crowdsourcing campaign to underwrite tickets for the 1000 TUSD students and anyone else who would otherwise not have the money to buy a ticket. Ticket sales are the lifeblood of a theatre company. They pay for all the administrative costs (staff salaries, office space, utilities, insurance, equipment, supplies) that project grants do not. Without this income, no matter how many grants we receive, Borderlands would come to a grinding halt.

We're betting that caring individuals with means will make it possible for EVERYONE to enjoy this landmark event. This RADICAL HOSPITALITY process was developed by Mixed Blood Theatre in Minneapolis four years ago. We are excited to implement this compassion based idea in order to bring new audiences to the theatre. (Read article on Radical Hospitality here
