· Shoot dates: November 30 - December 3, 2019 (4-day shoot). See character descriptions for approx. number of shoot days per role.

Synopsis
AWAY, TOGETHER is a drama centered on a school camping trip gone wrong. AYAH and her father RASHID (who recently moved to America) join fellow classmates and parents from Ayah's new school, for a weekend of skill-building. While the school's intentions are genuine, discomfort arises and Ayah is eager to explore more of the wild on her own for the first time leading her into a whole new place of discovery.
About Writer/Director
SANA A. MALIK is a filmmaker and journalist. She has produced video and written stories for BBC, MTV, BuzzFeed and VICE. As a storyteller, Malik is drawn to stories of migration, belonging and overcoming hardship in unexpected ways. Her first film, Guanajuato Norte, won a BAFTA student film award and was a recipient of the duPont-Chrichton award for best film. Malik received the 2019 Move Mountains Filmmakers Grant to direct and produce AWAY, TOGETHER. She is the founder and director of the award-winning media company This is Worldtown for Women of Color visual storytellers and is a graduate of Columbia University's School of Journalism, the University of London-LSHTM and the University of Toronto.
Roles We Are Seeking:
[AYAH]. Female. 12 years old. Middle Eastern. Afghan and Iranian talent who speak Pashto / Dari are preferred (but open to talent of all Middle Eastern backgrounds). Open to actors and non-actors for this role. Should have good improv skills. Ayah is a reserved young girl with brown hair. Feels like an outsider as she recently moved to New Mexico. Stern and confident with intense eyes. Incredibly sharp, Ayah is fiercely independent but celebratory. Lost her mother when she was born. Unenthusiastic for her first camping trip which is her school's Fall event. Talent must have valid work permit. LEAD. Shoots approx 4 days. Please note in your submission whether or not you can be a NM local hire.
[RASHID]. Male. 35-45 years old. Middle Eastern. Middle Eastern. Afghan and Iranian talent who speak Pashto / Dari are preferred (but open to talent of all Middle Eastern backgrounds). Should have good improv skills. Rashid is Ayah's stoic father. A quiet man with kind eyes and a warm smile. While Rashid is stern looking and comes off serious, his sense of humor shows there's a softness to him. Worked as an English teacher in a refugee camp. Has a sad longing for the past, and is deeply attached to his daughter. LEAD. Shoots approx 3 days. Please note in your submission whether or not you can be a NM local hire.
[CARRIE]. Female. 40-43 years old. Caucasian. Should have good improv skills. Carrie is a blonde or red-headed social worker from Ayah's school. She is sprightly, enthusiastic, and prepared. Slightly quirky, a little anxious. While she means well, Carrie says things that are not entirely sensitive to the situation. She's a bit affected and overly engaged in Ayah and Rashid's life. SUPPORTING. Shoots approx 3 days. NM local hire preferred.
[JENNY]. NM local hire preferred. Female. 12 years old. Caucasian. Open to actors and non-actors for this role. Should have good improv skills. Ayah's school mate. Jenny is curious about the world around her and comes across as socially unaware but friendly. Pointed with her feedback. Talent must have valid work permit. SUPPORTING. Shoots approx 1 day. NM local hire preferred.
[SARA]. NM local hire preferred. Female. 25-35 years old. All ethnicities. Sara is a woman of color and a social worker at Ayah's school, who is in training and helps her co-worker Carrie facilitate a kids camping trip. She is grounded, sympathetic, and earthy. Connects with Ayah and Rashid. SUPPORTING. Shoots approx 1 day. NM local hire preferred.
