TUCSON, AZ – More than 50 luminaries in the arts – artists, arts organizations and arts supporters – will be honored at The 2009 Lumies ceremony on Sunday, May 7 at the Temple of Music and Art.

The Lumies recognize and celebrate the extraordinary contributions of artists, arts organizations and arts supporters to the cultural life of Pima County. Nine winners will be announced at the Lumies ceremony, presented by the Tucson Pima Arts Council. It will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the temple, 330 S. Scott Ave. in downtown Tucson.

KOLD meteorologist Chuck George returns to host the “Lumies” for the second year in a row.
The 2009 Lumies will be presented in these nine categories: Individual and Lifetime Achievement for Artists, Emerging and Established Arts Organizations, Large Business Partner; Arts Support Award (for individual or small business), Arts Education (for individual and an organization) and the Arts Volunteer Award.
Presenters will include three 2008 Lumie Award winners – Comcast Corporate Affairs Manager Kelle Maslyn, Arizona Theatre Company’s Executive Director Jessica Andrews and Greater Oro Valley Arts Council Executive Director Kate Marquez. Other presenters will be Tucson City Council Member Nina J. Trasoff and Pima County Supervisor Richard Elias. Tucson City Vice Mayor Regina Romero is the Honorary Chair of the 2009 Lumies.
Each year individuals, arts organizations and businesses are nominated by members of the community. This year, 35 of the Lumie nominees are individuals working in the arts, volunteering in the arts or involved in arts education. The complete list of more than 50 nominees is on the Arts Council website at www.tucsonpimaartscouncil.org.
The Tucson Pima Arts Awards began in 2001 as the Mayor’s Arts Awards under the leadership of Beth Walkup. In 2005, they were renamed the Tucson Pima Arts and Business Awards. The awards ceremonies have been presented by the Arts Council every year. “The Lumies” is the name of the award designed by local artist Tom Philabaum to honor luminaries in the arts community.
The Lumie awards ceremony is a partnership of the public and private sectors in Pima County and is the single event in the region that recognizes and celebrates this vital connection.
Sponsors of The 2009 Lumies include Alphagraphics, Comcast, Community Performing Arts Center of Green Valley and Tucson Regional Economic Opportunity (TREO). Media sponsors include Inside Tucson Business and the Tucson Weekly.
The Tucson Pima Arts Council is the designated arts agency for the City of Tucson and Pima County. Earlier this year TPAC awarded $350,000 in grants to 56 non-profit arts organizations throughout the city and county. TPAC also operates the Community Arts program, funding residencies for professional artists and underserved youth in urban neighborhoods and rural areas. TPAC oversees public arts projects throughout Pima County. TPAC presents the Lumie Awards in the spring and the Open Studio Tour each fall. It also supports free Family Arts performances throughout the year. For more information, call 520-624-0595 or visit www.tucsonpimaartscouncil.org.
