STORIES THAT SOAR! PRESENTS A FAMILY EVENT AT
MARRONEY THEATRE
Best of Stories That Soar! Showcases Student Authors
from 10 Tucson Elementary Schools
Where can you find a hungry Magic Box, a giant talking baby doll, an evil lunch lady with a hairy mole, a fight between pizza and spaghetti, along with a host of other imaginative characters in surprising situations!? Only at the Best of Stories that Soar!, of course.
On Saturday, May 9, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m at the UA Marroney Theatre, Stories that Soar! will present their 2009 Best of Stories that Soar! show, weaving together some of the most innovative pieces written by kindergarten through sixth-grade authors from ten local Tucson schools.
In their fourth year operating as a non-profit, Stories that Soar! empowers children to believe in themselves by giving voice to their original words and creative ideas. The Stories that Soar! (STS!) theatre program invites elementary school students to “feed” the hungry, talking Magic Box™ their stories, promising to give them back magic! The result is both fascinating and delightful, with stories ranging from introspective to completely outrageous. The STS! professional acting troupe selects about twenty-five stories from the hundreds submitted for artistic interpretation. After working collaboratively to transform the stories, using dance, acrobatics, music, comedy, drama and more, the adult performers return to the school to give the children their stories back as a culturally rich, multi-media live performance. We culminate each season with the Best of Stories that Soar!, a spectacular event publicly celebrating the amazing powers of children’s imaginations, literacy and the performing arts.
During the 2008-2009 academic year, Stories That Soar! visited ten schools within the Tucson Unified, Flowing Wells, Sunnyside, and Vail School Districts, bringing to life the stories of over 300 children.
The two May 9th performances will be held at the Marroney Theatre on the University of Arizona campus (in the Fine Arts complex, Speedway/Park). The pre-show reception begins an hour before curtain time for each performance and includes free refreshments, balloons, face painting, raffles, and a silent auction. Admission is $5 for children age 12 and under and $8 for adults.
Tickets are currently on sale at Antigone Books, 411 N. 4th Avenue, Tucson, AZ, and Mrs. Tiggy-Winkles, 4811 E Grant Rd # 151, Tucson, AZ. For additional ticket information, please call 203-3511.
