Coming in May…

The Comedy Genius

Of Don Marquis.

The Comedy Playhouse will present The Comedy Genius of Don Marquis May 11th  – May 20th.  Don Marquis was a funny man, a very funny man.  As a daily columnist for the New York Sun and later the New York Tribune, Don Marquis introduced many comic characters to his readership. The Old Soak was a lovable reprobate who constantly misquoted the Bible and bemoaned the existence of Prohibition.  Hermione was an impressionable young girl who bubbled about the most recent topic of her "forward thinkers" group.

Perhaps Don Marquis's most inspired creation came one March morning when he returned to his office to find a complete column in his typewriter.  The column was perfectly spelled and punctuated, but there were no capitalizations.  This was because it was written overnight by a cockroach named Archy.  Being a cockroach he couldn't reach the "Shift" key in order to capitalize a letter.

For the rest of Don Marquis's career, Archy would "submit" a column several times a month.  Archy specialized in chronicling "life from below." Archy's columns included the adventures of his friends, most notably the office cat named Mehitabel.  Mehitabel was in her ninth life, and she claimed that in one of her earlier lives, she had been Cleopatra.

Laugh with  Nell Summers and Bruce Bieszki as they present The Comedy Genius Don Marquis.  Admission is $12, with discounts available.  The Comedy Genius of Don Marquis plays May 11th   to May 20th.  Performances will be Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30pm and Sunday afternoons at 3:00pm.

The Comedy Playhouse is located at 3620 N. 1st Avenue at the northeast corner of 1st Avenue and Prince Road.  The Comedy Playhouse has lit, adjacent parking The Comedy Genius of Don Marquis  is apppriopriate for ages ten and up.
