I Dream in Widescreen: BFA Thesis Films from the University of Arizona School of Theatre, Film & Television in the College of Fine Arts, will return this year to the Fox Tucson Theatre downtown on Saturday, May 12, at 7:00pm. This popular film-screening event will unveil an array of thesis films written, produced, directed and acted by UA students who are about to graduate from the School, and feature members of the Tucson community. Last year’s screening attracted a record 1,000+ audience members.
The School of Theatre, Film & Television is pleased to announce that the Los Angeles-based postproduction facility, FotoKem, will return as I Dream in Widescreen's lead sponsor providing the FotoKem New Filmmaker Award. The award of $5,000 in film services by FotoKem will be presented to the winning thesis film director for his or her next film production. "The FotoKem New Filmmaker Award is tremendously significant to an emerging filmmaker," noted Lisanne Skyler, Assistant Professor. "It offers critical recognition and professional growth at a pivotal moment in a filmmaker’s career.” Walt Rose, the Director of Student Services at FotoKem, is expected to attend the screening once again to present the award to the winning student director.
Entertainment Partners, the creator of Movie Magic Budgeting and Scheduling software, is also supporting the event with two awards recognizing the integral role of the producer in the filmmaking process. Two student producers will each win the Entertainment Partners Award for Excellence in Producing.
“We are proud to celebrate the work of the student producers as well as the directors emerging from the School,” said Bruce Brockman, Director of the School of Theatre, Film and Television.
The School is delighted to announce that the screening competition for the FotoKem New Filmmaker Award and the Entertainment Partners Awards for Excellence in Producing will be judged by a prestigious, national panel from across the film industry. The 2012 jurors include Robert Hawk, an independent film producer, consultant, and veteran of the American independent film scene for 30 years; Jon Korn, Shorts Programmer for the Sundance Film Festival; and Zoë Elton, the longtime Director of Programming for the Mill Valley Film Festival in Northern California.
“Previous thesis films have gone on to screen at festivals such as the Sundance Film Festival and the LA Shortsfest,” said Yuri Makino, Associate Director of the School of Theatre, Film & Television. “This year's slate of films is characterized by the original voices and creative approaches the community has come to expect from the program.”
I Dream In Widescreen will take place at 7:00pm, Saturday, May 12, at the Fox Tucson Theatre, located at 17 W. Congress Street, in downtown Tucson and is made possible with support from the Fox Tucson Theatre Foundation, FotoKem, Entertainment Partners, The Loft Cinema, and the UA Hanson Film Institute.
An advance press DVD of the films will be available for review on April 20, 2012. Please contact Professor Beverly Seckinger at (520) 621-1239 or bsecking@email.arizona.edu.
