Ariel Dorfman's DEATH AND THE MAIDEN is a moral thriller about a woman, Paulina, who believes that a stranger who comes to her home is the doctor who, under a military dictatorship, tortured and raped her many years before. (The play's title is taken from a piece of music by Franz Schubert; Paulina loved the piece but grew to revile it when it was played repeatedly during her torture sessions.)

ABOUT THE PLAY
Dorfman began writing the play in the mid-1980s, when he was in exile from Chile, a country under the rule of the military dictator General Augusto Pinochet. It was not until Chile's return to democracy in 1990 that Dorfman returned to the play and "understood ... how the story had to be told." A workshop production of DEATH AND THE MAIDEN was staged in Santiago, Chile, opening in March, 1991, and in July of that year the play had its world premiere at London's Royal Court Upstairs. In November the production, which received the London Time Out Award for best play of 1991, moved to the Royal Court Mainstage. Reception of the play was positive, critics finding it both dramatically engaging as well as historically timely (given the number of societies around the world facing painful legacies of repressive regimes). DEATH AND THE MAIDEN is valued as a dramatic work that examines the psychological repercussions of human rights abuses.

ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT
Ariel Dorfman, a Chilean-American author of numerous works of fictions, plays, poems, essays and films in both Spanish and English, has been called a “literary grandmaster” (Time) and “one of the greatest living Latin American novelists” (Newsweek). His books have been translated into over 40 languages and received many international prizes. Among his plays – performed in more than one hundred countries - are DEATH AND THE MAIDEN, which has won dozens of best play awards around the world, including England's Olivier award for Best Play. Other plays are READER (opened at The Traverse at the Edinburgh Festival) and WIDOWS (written with Tony Kushner, opened at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles), both of which have won Kennedy Center awards. He is the first foreign author to be commissioned to write a play, THE OTHER SIDE, for the New National Theatre in Tokyo, which premiered in 2004 in Japan and then opened at the Manhattan Theatre Club in New York, with Rosemary Harris and John Cullum. Other recent plays are PURGATORIO (opened at the Seattle Rep and will premiere next year in Madrid with Viggo Mortensen in the title role) and PICASSO’S CLOSET (Theatre J, Washington DC, 2006). Dorfman has been active in the defense of human rights for many decades, having addressed the General Assembly of the United Nations and the main Forum of UNESCO in Paris. He writes regularly for many of the most important newspapers and magazines in the US (New York Times, L A Times, Washington Post, Harper’s, The Nation, Time) and abroad (El Pais, the Observer, the Guardian, The Independent, Le Monde, El Pais, Frankfurter Algemeine, L’ Unita, La Stampa, etc.) He teaches half the year at Duke University, where he holds the Walter Hines Page Chair of Literature and Latin American Studies. He has received numerous honorary degrees and is a member of The Académie Universelle des Cultures in France and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He lives in Durham, North Carolina with his wife, Angelica, and travels frequently to Santiago, Chile. He is the author of the forthcoming memoir, Feeding on Dreams: Confessions of an unrepentant exile.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Cynthia Jeffery - Paulina - An ASU graduate with a degree in Theatre Arts, Cynthia has lived in Hawaii for 15 years where she owned and operated “Wide Eyed Theatre”, an after school program, and co-produced three videos on Teen Crime Prevention with her husband, Tobin. She has worked as a DJ for “K-Hawaii’s Rock N’ Roll” and earned 4 Tiki Awards for Best Actress in such shows as A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE (Blanche), MACBETH (Lady Macbeth), CRIMES OF THE HEART (Meg) and BEYOND THERAPY (Prudence). In Tucson, she received MAC nominations for RELATIVELY SPEAKING (Sheila) and NO EXIT (Inez) and won recognition for her role as Amanda in LTW’s THE GLASS MENAGERIE. Favorite roles include Flora in HUMBLE BOY, Nettie in THE SUBJECT WAS ROSES and Mag in THE BEAUTY QUEEN OF LEENANE. Film credits include ‘The Lost River,’ ‘The Greening of Eritrea,’ ‘Spin,’ ‘Animal Planet’s I Shouldn’t be Alive’ and ‘Finley Wade.’ She currently works for KOLD News 13 as a National Sales Assistant and voiceover talent.
Cliff Madison - Gerardo - hails from Mesa, Arizona and grew up in Casa Grande before coming to Tucson to study theatre at Pima Community College. He was last seen on the mainstage at Live Theatre Workshop in RECKLESS, THE DINNER PARTY, A THOUSAND CLOWNS, THE UNEXPECTED GUEST and THE MYSTERY OF IRMA VEP, to name a few. Cliff also recently performed in the Etcetera productions of WHITE PEOPLE and THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST, as well as the Winding Road Theater Ensemble production of TALLEY’S FOLLY and Borderlands’ 26 MILES.
Keith Wick - Roberto - is happy to once again appear in another Live Theatre Workshop Mainstage production. Previous LTW acting credits include DANCING AT LUGHNASA, SPIDER’S WEB, FUNNY MONEY, LOST IN YONKERS, A TUNA CHRISTMAS, WIFE BEGINS AT FORTY, WHAT THE BUTLER SAW, DON’T DRESS FOR DINNER (2010 Arizona Daily Star MAC Award Winner -- Best Actor in a Comedy), THE SISTERS ROSENSWEIG, HOW I LEARNED TO DRIVE, THREE VIEWINGS and RECKLESS. Keith has also appeared in several All Together Theatre productions at LTW. He is a graduate of The American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Some of his favorite roles include Fluellen in HENRY V, Second Man in AND THEY DANCE REAL SLOW IN JACKSON, Clive Champion-Cheney in THE CIRCLE and Nathan Detroit in GUYS AND DOLLS. Keith is a recipient of an AriZoni award for his portrayal of Dromio of Syracuse in the Southwest Shakespeare Production of A COMEDY OF ERRORS.
Chris Wilken - Direction - has directed over fifty productions in and around Tucson for many Theatre companies including Childsplay of Tempe and Arizona Repertory Theatre at the University of Arizona. He is a founding member of Borderlands Theatre Company, serving as Associate Artistic Director for many years. Chris served as a faculty instructor in the Theatre Arts Program at PCC for almost 2 decades. Previous directing credits with LTW include CLOUD 9 and THE FOREIGNER.
