The Four Directions - A Winter Solstice Celebration
As the shortest day of the year, the winter Solstice marks the turning from cold, dark days of winter to the warmer, light days of spring and summer. Historically, this season is a time of reflection, renewal, and community celebration, and we're honoring this year's Solstice with our performance of "The Four Directions." This collaborative effort highlights the elemental qualities of each of the four directions of the medicine wheel, integrating cultural identities and traditions of the past with the blending of today's global communitites. In this Solstice celebration we envision honoring the interconnectedness of our humanity as we move forward with the sun.
This year we have the distinct pleasure of collaborating with Billbob Brown. Brown has returned to Arizona after a distinguished career as professor/head of the Dance Departments at UMass Amherst and Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, and promises to delight the eye and ear with video projections, and digital interactions with people across the world, along with his engaging, humanistic style of choreography. He will be directing "The Four Directions," as well as choreographing the show along with Nanette Robinson, co-founder of ZUZI!
We're also very excited to be collaborating with Arts for All for this year's community workshop and Solstice performance. Arts for All is a Tucson based organization founded by Marsha Berger which provides accessible education, training, and experiences in the arts for children, particularly those with special needs. We will be having the special honor of integrating Arts for All's adult peformance group in this show! Karenne Koo and Nanette will be working on this segment of the workshop and performance. We invite you to come be a part of this celebration of light!
"The Four Directions" will be performed by ZUZI! Dance and collaborators at the ZUZI! Theater in the Historic Y at 738 N. 5th Avenue in Tucson.
