High School Production of “The Wizard of Oz” Includes Lost Dance Number

Ironwood Ridge High School students will perform a deleted scene from the movie musical version of “The Wizard of Oz” in their April 7-9 production of the Academy Award-winning film.

They’ll introduce a Wicked Witch of the West henchman and perform the jazzy “The Jitterbug Dance.” The jiving, giant insect attacks Dorothy, the Tin Man, the cowardly Lion and the Scarecrow, who end up dancing uncontrollably.

The scene landed on the cutting-room floor in an effort to shorten the movie. The scene itself did not survive, but footage of the filming shows the dance. It’s become a popular addition to stage presentations of the 1939 film.

The Ironwood Ridge High School production also will include extended introductions to some of the famous musical numbers, including “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and songs by each of the lead fantasy characters.
