TRYING is a two-character play based on the author’s experience during 1967-1968 when she worked for Francis Biddle at his home in Washington, DC. Judge Biddle had been Attorney General of the United States under Franklin Roosevelt. After the war, President Truman named him Chief Judge of the American Military Tribunal at Nuremberg. The play is about a young Canadian girl and an old, Philadelphia aristocrat, “trying” to understand each other in what Biddle knows is the final year of his life.

ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT
Joanna McClelland Glass was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Her plays have been produced in many North American regional theatres, as well as in England, Ireland, Australia, and Germany. Her one-act plays, CANADIAN GOTHIC and AMERICAN MODERN, were first produced at the Manhattan Theatre Club in New York City in 1972. ARTICHOKE, starring Colleen Dewhurst, was first produced at Long Wharf Theatre, New Haven, CT, in 1974. TO GRANDMOTHER’S HOUSE WE GO, starring Eva LeGallienne, was first produced at the Alley Theatre, Houston, Texas, moving to Broadway in 1980. PLAY MEMORY, directed by Harold Prince, was first produced at the McCarter Theatre, Princeton, New Jersey, moving to Broadway in 1984. PLAY MEMORY won a Tony Award nomination that year. YESTERYEAR was originally produced by the Canadian Stage Company in Toronto in 1989. IF WE ARE WOMEN premiered in the U.S. in the summer of 1993, at the Williamstown Theatre Festival, Williamstown, MA. The Canadian premiere was a co-production between the Vancouver Playhouse and Canadian Stage Company, Toronto, 1994. The British premiere was in London, starring Joan Plowright, directed by Richard Olivier. In 1984-85, Ms. Glass was awarded a Rockefeller grant. She was playwright-in-residence at Yale Repertory Theatre. Other grants: the National Endowment for the Arts, 1980, and the Guggenheim Fellowship in 1981. Ms. Glass won the Francesca Primus Award in 1994, and the Berrilla Kerr Award in 2000. TRYING was first presented by Victory Gardens Theatre in Chicago in the spring of 2004; the play won Chicago's prestigious Jefferson Award for Best New Play. TRYING was then produced in New York City at The Promenade Theatre, in the fall/winter of 2004-2005. The Canadian premiere was at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa in September, 2004, followed by a Canadian Stage Company production in Toronto in April of 2005. TRYING has now enjoyed over fifty productions in both the United States and Canada. It has recently been produced in London, England.
ARTIST BIOGRAPHIES
Elizabeth Leadon-Sonnenfelt - Sarah Schorr - is a graduate of the University of Washington with a B.A. in Theatre. Elizabeth has been seen on stages across the nation in AUNTIE MAME, BAREFOOT IN THE PARK, CINDERS, SERVANT OF TWO MASTERS, VINEGAR TOM, JIGSAW (World Premiere), THE LEGEND OF SLEEPY HOLLOW (National Tour), OVER THE RIVER AND THROUGH THE WOODS and THE MOUSETRAP. In Tucson she has performed with Live Theatre Workshop, Catalina Players, Beowulf Alley and Sacred Chicken Productions where her credits include I HATE HAMLET, CACTUS FLOWER, HUMBLE BOY, DANCING AT LUGHNASA, BEAU JEST, ANTON IN SHOW BUSINESS, CLOUD 9, THE TRANSYLVANIAN CLOCKWORKS, BLACKBIRD -- a performance which earned Elizabeth the 2010 Arizona Daily Star MAC Award for Best Actress in a Drama, and most recently as the title role in MY NAME IS RACHEL CORRIE for Etcetera, the late night series at LTW.
Kristi Loera - Production Stage Manager - is Live Theatre Workshop’s Executive Director. Kristi has been a part of theatre in Tucson for 17 years and proudly works both on stage and behind the scenes for the mainstage at LTW as well as with Etcetera (the late night series) and All Together Theatre (the children’s theatre). Kristi most recently served as PSM for the mainstage productions of THE DINNER PARTY, CLOUD 9 and MOON OVER BUFFALO and was last seen performing as Jocelyn Dunbar in David Sedaris’ SEASON’S GREETINGS! (2010 Arizona Daily Star MAC Award nomination for Best Actress in a comedy).
John Mills - Judge Francis Biddle - began acting in high school and played major roles throughout college and graduate school. After completing his doctorate in Theatre History and Dramatic Literature at Indiana University in 1961, he joined the faculty of the UA Drama Department and taught, acted and directed there until 1966, when he took up similar duties in the Theatre Dept. of SUNY, Binghamton. He returned to the UA in 1974 as a member of the English Dept. and taught courses there in Shakespeare and Modern English and American Drama until his retirement in 1998. He is the author of Language and Laughter: Comic Diction in the Plays of Bernard Shaw, Hamlet on Stage, and numerous publications in scholarly journals. In recent years, he has played Lord Summerhays in The Quintessential Stage production of MISALLIANCE, Sheriff in THE RAINMAKER and Hugo in SPIDER’S WEB for LTW, Carl in Festival Repertory Theatre’s MORNING’S AT SEVEN, The Devil in The Quintessential Stage’s DON JUAN IN HELL and Escalus in Tucson Theatre Ensemble’s MEASURE FOR MEASURE. For his portrayal of Norman in ON GOLDEN POND he was awarded with an LTW Ovation Award for Best Actor of the 2005-06 season. His most recent appearance with LTW was as Weller in THE GIN GAME.
Sabian Trout - Direction - is thoroughly enjoying her fifth season as LTW’s Artistic Director. Previous LTW directing credits include THE DINNER PARTY, THE SISTERS ROSENSWEIG, THE GIN GAME, WHAT THE BUTLER SAW, WIFE BEGINS AT FORTY, SHIRLEY VALENTINE, LOST IN YONKERS, FUNNY MONEY, DANCING AT LUGHNASA, THE LAST NIGHT OF BALLYHOO, THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH, BELL BOOK AND CANDLE, STEEL MAGNOLIAS, ARSENIC AND OLD LACE, BROADWAY BOUND and BABY WITH THE BATHWATER. Professional credits include productions at the Stratford Festival of Canada, Indiana Repertory Theatre, Milwaukee Repertory Theatre, Missouri Repertory Theatre, Actors Theatre of Phoenix, The Phoenix Theatre in Indianapolis, Austin’s State Theatre, LA Theatre Works and Arizona Theatre Company. Other Tucson directing credits include LOVE LETTERS, EXTREMITIES, THE TALE OF THE ALLERGIST’S WIFE and ON THE VERGE. Some favorite directing projects include HOW I LEARNED TO DRIVE, SPIKE HEELS, BEIRUT and KORCZAK AND THE CHILDREN. Sabian earned her MFA in Directing from the University of Texas in 1995.
