A charming, heartwarming holiday tale laced with lyricism and wit, sure to impart a warm glow to audiences of all ages. Eight-year-old Buddy and his eccentric elderly cousin, Miss Sook, deal with the school bully, make fruitcake for Eleanor Roosevelt, cut down the perfect Christmas tree, and make memories that will last a lifetime.

 

 

ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT

 

Russell Vandenbroucke has worked as a director, dramaturg, playwright, and producer at regional theatres across the country. Plays include ATOMIC BOMBERS, HOLIDAY MEMORIES, SCHOOL PLAY, and SOLDIERS’ CIRCLE; books include: Truths the Hand Can Touch: The Theatre of Athol Fugard and The Theatre Quotation Book: A Treasury of Insights and Insults. He holds a DFA from the Yale School of Drama and teaches courses in script analysis, the enjoyment of theatre, introduction to graduate studies, and playwriting.

 

Truman Capote (author), best known for his classic Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1958) and the true crime novel In Cold Blood (1966--winner Edgar award), was an eminent American author of numerous short stories, plays, novels and other non-fiction works. Capote was also famous for his flamboyant public persona, extravagant and outrageous lifestyle. He was born in New Orleans on September 30, 1924. His obsessive love for writing forced him to quit college because he believed college was teaching him nothing, instead it was taking away valuable time he could otherwise devote to writing. Capote began working at The New Yorker while in school and was soon published in other established magazines such as The Atlantic Monthly, Harper’s Bazaar, Harper’s Magazine. He won the O. Henry award for his short story works in 1945. His first novel, Other Voices, Other Rooms (1948) launched Capote’s career as a novelist after becoming an instant bestseller. It was followed by another successful publication, A Tree of Night and Other Stories (1949). Capote’s first non-fiction work, The Muses are Heard (1956) was a collection of articles which included travel essays from his trip to Europe as well as theatrical pieces. Leaving behind a wealth of literary works, Truman Capote passed away in Los Angeles on August 25, 1984. 

 

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

 

Rhonda Hallquist (Director) - previously directed VISITING MR. GREEN and THE COCKTAIL HOUR for LTW’s mainstage. Elsewhere, her directing credits include BECKY'S NEW CAR for Sacred Chicken Productions and STREET THEATRE, 8X10 GLOSSY, and HANNAH FREE for 1 in 10 Theatre. She was last seen onstage at LTW as Myra Kesselman (REGRETS ONLY), and with Arizona Onstage’s Production ALL IN THE TIMING. Other recent roles at LTW include Mary (MAURITIUS), Sue (ALL MY SONS), Rachel (RECKLESS--2011 Arizona Daily Star MAC Award nomination for Best Actress), Lane (THE CLEAN HOUSE--2010 Arizona Daily Star MAC Award nomination for Best Actress in a Comedy), Betty (WIFE BEGINS AT FORTY), and Suzanne (DON’T DRESS FOR DINNER). For Beowulf Alley Theatre, she played Maureen (THE BEAUTY QUEEN OF LEENANE--also a 2011 Arizona Daily Star MAC Award nomination for Best Actress), and Beth (DINNER WITH FRIENDS). For Sacred Chicken Productions, she played Casey (ANTON IN SHOW BUSINESS--2009 Arizona Daily Star MAC Award nomination for Best Actress in a Comedy).

 

Candace Bean (Woman) is delighted to be making her LTW debut. A native of Southeast Michigan, she earned her B.A. in Theatre Arts from Albion College. In Tucson, she worked with Beowulf Alley, The Santa Cruz Shoestring Players, Red Barn Theatre, and Old Pueblo Playwrights. Some favorite past productions include CRIMES OF THE HEART (Babe), DESDEMONA: A PLAY ABOUT A HANDKERCHIEF (Desdemona), ALMOST MAINE (Rhonda, Marvalynn, Waitress), FURTHER ADVENTURES OF HEDDA GABLER (The Woman in Pink, Cassandra, Eilert, etc.), THE UNDERPANTS (Louise), RABBIT HOLE (Izzy), FOOD FOR FISH (Dexter), THE TEMPEST (Miranda), RED HERRING (Mrs. Kravitz), and MAJOR BARBARA (Barbara Undershaft). 

 

Matt Brown (Man) - Matt is thrilled to be making his LTW debut. He began acting as a child and earned a Bachelor’s in Theatre Arts at Western Washington University, then lived for several years in Los Angeles where he also appeared in numerous movies and television shows. Matt has lived in Tucson for three years and has worked with Beowulf Alley, Red Barn Theatre, Old Pueblo Playwrights, and Murder Mystery Mayhem. His favorite past roles include ROUGH CROSSING (Dvornichek), FURTHER ADVENTURES OF HEDDA GABLER (Tesman), LYSISTRATA (Pleones), THE UNDERPANTS (Cohen), HAMLET (Polonius), COUGAR! (Peter), THE FOREIGNER (Owen Musser), OF MICE AND MEN (Whit), and THE CHERRY ORCHARD (Firs).

 

Carlisle Ellis (Sook) - is making her twelfth appearance on the mainstage at LTW having previously performed in SOUVENIR, THE COCKTAIL HOUR, SHIRLEY VALENTINE (2012), THE SISTERS ROSENSWEIG, CLOUD 9, LOVE LETTERS, CLEAN HOUSE, SHIRLEY VALENTINE (2009, AZ Daily Star MAC Award for Best Actress), MOON OVER BUFFALO, STEEL MAGNOLIAS, and A PERFECT GANESH. Carlisle received a B.A. in Speech and Drama from Stanford University and has appeared with many other local theatre companies including Borderlands Theatre, Invisible Theatre, and Arizona Repertory Theatre. Favorite roles outside of LTW include Melissa (LOVE LETTERS), Wikevich (ANTON IN SHOW BUSINESS), Mary (ON THE VERGE), Marjorie (THE TALE OF THE ALLERGISTS WIFE), Lillian (THAT SLUT!),Susan (EL DESEO/DESIRE), Susan (WOMAN IN MIND), April (SAVAGE IN LIMBO), Juba (HEATHEN VALLEY), Kate (BRIGHTON BEACH MEMOIRS and BROADWAY BOUND), Grace (FAITH HEALER) and Titania (A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM).

 

Chris Fernandez (Buddy) - was born and raised here in Tucson. He is a three-time participant in the Arizona Theater Company's Summer On Stage program. He graduated from Tucson Magnet High School and currently attends Pima Community College. This is his first time performing at LTW. He performed in productions of A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM, CHICAGO, MACHINAL, LEGALLY BLONDE: THE MUSICAL, and IN YOUR EYES. He placed third in the English Speaking Union's Annual Shakespeare Competition.

 

Cliff Madison (Truman) - hails from Mesa, Arizona and grew up in Casa Grande before coming to Tucson to study theatre at Pima Community College. He was last seen at LTW in LOBBY HERO, THE CHOSEN, FALLEN ANGELS, DEATH AND THE MAIDEN, RECKLESS, THE DINNER PARTY, A THOUSAND CLOWNS, THE UNEXPECTED GUEST and THE MYSTERY OF IRMA VEP, to name a few. Cliff also recently performed in the Winding Road Theater Ensemble production of TALLEY’S FOLLY and Borderlands’ 26 MILES.
