The Los Changuitos Feos de Tucson’s 50th anniversary celebration weekend starts Thursday, Aug. 21 and ends Saturday, Aug. 23 with a celebratory concert at 7 p.m. in the Tucson Convention Center Music Hall. There will be a reunion on Aug. 21 and 22 at the Marriott University Park Hotel.
A forum with scholars will present the history and culture of mariachi music and its traditions, particularly the evolution of the mariachi youth movement in the United States. The forum discussion is open to the public and free, with donations accepted to go to the Changos scholarship and music education fund.
A special Recognition Dinner will take place at the Tucson Marriott University Park on Friday, August 22 and will include the recognition of the first inductees of the Los Changuitos Feos Alumni Hall of Fame.
The Concert on Saturday will feature Mariachi Cobre from Disney World in Orlando. Some of the musicians in Mariachi Cobre were members of the original Changuitos. Other performers include Mariachi Garibaldi directed by Jeff Nevin, of Southwest College. Nevin created the first college-level study in mariachi music and is himself a former member of Los Changuitos. Tejano great and Grammy Award winner Adalberto Gallegos, also a former Changuitos, is also on the program with other alumni and current group members.
