FIN.

An original work of physical theatre created and performed by Angela Horchem

Directed by Laura Lippman with collaboration from Hannah Turner

Sunday afternoons at 12:30 PM

March 15 & April 5

Audience feedback is invited in these two workshop performances.

When Eleanor's beloved pet fish passes away, she must embark on an emotional journey through laughter and tears to find a new normal after his death. Actor-creator Angela Horchem navigates the stages of grief in a way that is both funny and profoundly moving. This comedy without words is appropriate for all ages.

"In discussions with counselors, I have learned that many well-intentioned people hurt grieving loved ones with uninformed statements about the process of grief that suggest a linear progression and clear completion," says Horchem. "My goal for FIN is to sincerely explore the process and start a conversation."

Horchem had the initial idea for FIN more than 10 years ago while working as a hospital clown at Diamond Children's Medical Center in Tucson. She and two clown therapist collaborators dreamed up the fish character and explored ways to mourn him. Last summer, Horchem received a New Works Artist Project Grant from the Arts Foundation for Tucson and Southern Arizona, which is funded by the City of Tucson and Pima County, to create and produce FIN. After the LTW workshop shows, Horchem hopes to tour FIN to local schools and communities with accompanying workshops about grief.

"It is vitally important to me to get new works of theatre, especially comedies, in front of an audience early in the process," says Horchem. "These workshop performances will allow me to incorporate valuable audience feedback into the final script."

The shows at LTW will focus on the development of the story and script. Some placeholder set pieces and props will be used to help the audience visualize the play, and stage directions will be used in place of tech or props that will be constructed over time.

Praise for previous work from Angela Horchem and collaborators

"…Along for the ride is the graceful Angela Horchem as an acrobatic stagehand with a troublesome mop. She also dives in as Chesterton's partner engaging in some synchronized swimming in a very small space. 'Mixtape' is a world brimming with silliness and childlike wonder, an utterly charming show for all ages…" ~ * * * * * 5 Stars, Winnipeg Free Press

"…'MixTape' commands your attention with small, poignant movements… Sometimes, when you're encouraged to focus on tiny movements, they can be quite captivating. That's exactly what physical theatre duo Matt Walley and Angela Horchem specialize in. Horchem emerges from the trunk, too, to complement Walley's slow-but-sure routine with some more frenetic moves, including an expert turn as a dancing housecleaner…" ~ * * * * 4 Stars, CBC Manitoba

"…When it comes to Theatre 3, silence truly is golden…The company incorporates mime, dance, clowning, music - just about every theatrical form but speech…You don't need words to understand Matt Walley and Angela Horchem and the characters they bring to life with movement, masks and music…Both actors move with grace and precision, necessary when doing physical theater…" ~ Mac Award Honorable Mention, Arizona Daily Star

"…The talented and creative approach of Matt Walley and Angela Horchem, the forces behind this new venture, was unveiled last weekend, and there is no doubt that something unusual, fresh, challenging and entertaining has been introduced into our already-thriving theater community…Horchem is the more athletic of the two, and she inhabits space much differently than Walley. Often, she is much more abstract, but she is no less compelling, and she still quietly confirms that we are participants without, of course, our lifting a muscle. She discovers more personas than Walley; she also makes use of some beautifully crafted masks. In its simplicity, it is grand. In its creativity, it is a pleasure. As a joint venture—because Walley and Horchem engage so genuinely with us—Theatre 3's 'MixTape' rocks…" ~ Genuinely Engaged Review | Tucson Weekly
