MARTIE VAN DER VOORT PERFORMS ONE-WOMAN SHOW TRANSFORMATIONS
Tucson, Arizona (May 3, 2009) "TransFormations," an original one-actor show about transgender lives and stories will premier in Tucson May 14th through 17th . “TransFormations” was conceived and written by Martie van der Voort and will be performed by Martie under the direction of Tom Slauson. The concept for this play was developed over the past two years through her personal research and interviews with members of the transgender community.
“Transgender people are often misunderstood and maligned. This work celebrates the humanity and resilience of this community, while exploring more universal issues of humans grappling with identity, transition, self-acceptance and relationships,” says van der Voort. The play’s setting is a support group meeting, and van der Voort plays eleven characters within and outside of the group. The audience members are included as new members. “I want the audience to feel free to ask any question,” (there will be some improv opportunity for that,) “and learn what they can about trans issues, but primarily this is about good theater, interesting characters and stories that broaden our humanness.” Tucson is a trans-welcoming community, with Wingspan (Tucson’s LGBT community center) and SAGA (the Southern Arizona Gender Alliance) offering great support and resources. She adds, “Tucson has had a Transgender Awareness Week for the past three years; the mayor proclaims it, and the council voted ‘gender identity’ in as a protected class – it makes sense that this show should premier here, in my home town!”
"TransFormations" will be staged at the Cabaret Theatre at the Temple of Music and Art, located at 330 S. Scott Ave. The show runs May 14-17. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday and at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday. Thursday night performance will be interpreted for the hearing impaired. Reservations are recommended. Tickets for Friday through Sunday are $15 and are also available at Antigone Books, 411 N. 4th Ave. Tickets for Thursday’s opening night are “pay what you can.” Sunday’s matinee performance benefits Wingspan and the Southern Arizona Gender Alliance. Call 795-3867 for reservations and ticket information. “TransFormations” contains adult content and language.
