Up with People to headline special benefit concert

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

 

Tucson (May 15, 2009)

A totally unexpected tour cancellation has created a highly unusual opportunity for the Cultural Exchange Council of Tucson (CEC) and their annual signature event, Tucson Meet Yourself (TMY).  An international cast of Up with People (UWP) is headed to Tucson for a previously unscheduled visit and will headline in a concert benefiting TMY on Friday, May 29, 2009 at the Fox Theater.

 

Just back from a tour of Taiwan, Up with People’s Cast A 2009 was to have headed into Mexico for a five-week tour when the H1N1 Flu hit.  It quickly became apparent to organization executives that the tour would need to be postponed for a later time.  Up with People, which has many alumni, hosts and friends in Tucson, its former hometown, quickly put together a stay with Mia Hansen, a former UWP staff member and current President of the Cultural Exchange Council of Tucson.

 

The result will be a special evening of multi-cultural entertainment entitled, “Up with Tucson” to be held Friday, May 29 at 7:30 p.m. at the Fox Theater which will feature special selections from the 2009 Up with People Show with special guest performances by some of Tucson’s best cultural groups including Viva Arizona, Batucaxé, Ballet Folklorico Arizona, Sticks & Fingers, plus others.

 

Tickets, which are on sale at the Fox Theater Box Office, are $20 for adults, $12 for youth 18 & under.  A special $100 patron ticket will include a VIP package including pre-event reception, back stage access and valet parking.  All proceeds from “Up with Tucson” will go to the Cultural Exchange Council of Tucson, a non-profit 501c3, and their annual signature event, Tucson Meet Yourself. 

 

“This was an opportunity we could not pass up,” said Hansen.  “While we have had to jump through some hoops to put this together so quickly, it is a wonderful opportunity for the CEC and Up with People to work together.  UWP’s mission directly parallels CECs’ which is to encourage awareness, understanding, respect and expression of cultural diversity. This event will help raise much needed funds to present Tucson Meet Yourself, our city’s favorite, downtown festival, free to all this October and for many years to come.”

 

As a special bonus, Up with People will also perform their full two-hour production on Sunday, May 31 at the Fox at 2:00 p.m. Tickets for this special one-time matinee are $15 for adults/ $8 youth 18 & under and are also available at the Fox Theater Box Office.
