Tucson: Martial arts classes for actors

Trained self-defense teacher offers martial arts classes for actors.

In addition to being essential to safety and personal wellness, martial arts offer an important marker on an actor's resume. Being versatile in different styles of self-defense makes you more marketable, and widens the range of roles you will be eligible for. Both your career and personal life benefit from these remarkable teachings!

What kinds of martial arts are taught? We teach mixed martial arts, but only in the widest sense of the word. Our system is a combination of American Kenpo, Japanese Jui-jitsu, Atemewaza, Aikido, Boxing, Judo, Shotokan, Wing Chun, Ninpo, and more. Rather than being traditional, we are always working as a unit to integrate new ideas and concepts into the core of the program. The emphasis is on dynamic speed and explosive power, both of which are excellent for onscreen actors. Weapons work is available, and is integrated later into the program.

How is the class structured? Classes are taught in small groups privately, so that students receive the utmost care and attention to both safety and technique. Classes meet once a week, and are scheduled on somewhat flexible times, depending on the schedules of students. The instructor will also work to accommodate rates based on the needs of students. New students are only admitted with a majority approval from the other classmates.

About the instructor: Russell Johnson has been training in the martial arts for more than 20 years, having tried many systems. He has integrated his teachings into a unique, innovative whole that can accommodate many body types and ages. In addition to being a professional photographer, Russell is a licensed mental health professional. His aim is continually focusing on the betterment of the individual.

Please contact Russell at 520-204-1612 for more information, or Russj1@aol.com. We look forward to seeing you in class, and beginning your training!

(Tucson, AZ) When greedy developers want to spoil a magical part of the desert, cowboys and fairies have to band together to stop them. This is the story that will be developed with the help of children ages four to eight on the stage with our Active Imagination Theatre at Beowulf Alley Theatre each weekend through May 29, 2011 at 12 noon. This 40-minute venture into creativity is both fun and educational for children and will bring joy to the hearts of their parents as they help to develop the story and find a resolution to save the desert. We encourage them to dress in their cowboy and fairy outfits and help our team of adult actors. Each performance is just a little different as the children who are present help to create the story through their active imaginations.

Tucson: Casting Call, Feature Length Murder Mystery

Feature Length Murder Mystery (Tucson)

Anna Lisa is beautiful, intelligent, poised and confident. Given Anna Lisa's charm and good looks it really is not so surprising that Billy Ray Charles, a successful young lawyer, was stepping out on his wife to be with her (men can be like that) or that he immediately became the suspect when Anna Lisa was found dead (men are often punished for being like that). But after Billy Ray was tried and convicted, it became more and more difficult to believe that he actually committed the crime.

Nine Buddhas Pictures is shooting, Until Dead, a feature length murder mystery this summer here in Tucson. We are now doing our second round of casting for the following:

Anna Lisa. A beautiful young summer associate at a large law firm. Intelligent, poised, confident. 18-28. This role pays a flat fee of $1,000 on completion.

Billy Ray. A successful young lawyer at a large law firm. Smart, articulate, handsome. 25-45. This role pays a flat fee of $1,000 on completion.

Jackie Charles. Billy Ray's wife. A smart professional woman. 25-45. This role pays a flat fee of $1,000 on completion.

We are also casting for wide array of other actors to play lawyers (male and female), judges (male and female), summer associates (male and female), police and related investigators (male and female), jurors (male and female), bar and restaurant patrons (male and female), and party guests (male and female). None of the roles are race specific. Collectively we are looking for actors ranging in age from 18 to 70. These roles do not involve monetary compensation, but everyone does get title credit and a copy of the DVD.

WHEN: Sunday May 1, 2011. 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
WHERE: Old YWCA, 738 North 5th Avenue, Tucson.
WHAT TO DO: You will present a monologue. Use your own or one we provide. Bring a head shot and resume (even if you have already provided one).

Send a response here to schedule an appointment.

Why be in another short film when you can act in a feature?

ABOUT DEAD MAN’S CELL PHONE:

An incessantly ringing cell phone in a quiet cafe. A stranger at the next table who has had enough. And a dead man-- with a lot of loose ends. So begins Dead Man's Cell Phone, the odyssey of a woman forced to confront her own assumptions about morality, redemption, and the need to connect in a technologically obsessed world.

From the author of The Clean House (Pulitzer Prize finalist, winner of The Susan Smith Blackburn Award), Eurydice, Orlando, Melancholy, Passion Play, Demeter in the City, Late: a cowboy song and her latest, In The Next Room (The Vibrator Play).

A beguling comedy....a hallucinatory poetic fantasy that blends the mundane and the metaphysical, the blunt and the obscure, the patently bizarre and the bizarrely moving. As Dead Man's Cell Phone takes surprising twists and leaps, the lament for the supposed coziness of pre-digital culture takes on layers of nuance and contradiction. -- New York Times
