ATC’S SUMMER ON STAGE OFFERS FREE PERFORMANCES FOR TUCSON COMMUNITY

Thirty high school students to appear in Twelfth Night and Seussical

Arizona Theatre Company is proud to present Summer on Stage 2008, featuring thirty high school students from ten area schools who will star in two productions on Arizona Theatre Company’s stage at the Temple of Music and Art.

This summer’s productions will be William Shakespeare’s romantic comedy Twelfth Night; and the vibrant musical Seussical with music, lyrics and book by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, co-concieved by Lynn Aherns, Stephen and Eric Idle based on the works of Dr. Seuss. Free performances are scheduled for July 30 – August 2 at the Temple of Music and Art in downtown Tucson.

“If music be the food of love, play on!” When a shipwreck separates Viola and her twin brother, Sebastian on a remote island during the roaring twenties it’s the start of an escapade of mismatched lovers, and mistaken identity. Enjoy one of Shakespeare’s most popular plays in which a royal love triangle swings from ingenious comedy to glorious romance. Directed by Cale Epps, Twelfth Night plays Wednesday, July 30 and Friday, August 1 at 7PM.

Dr. Seuss's best-loved stories collide and cavort in the unforgettable musical caper Seussical. Join, The Cat in the Hat, Horton the Elephant, an imaginative young Who named JoJo, the one-feathered bird Miss Gertrude McFuzz, and the amazingly lazy Mayzie La Bird as they find themselves intertwined in an incredible crazy-quilt adventure, in which the power of imagination and the most miraculous "think" saves the day! Directed by Sara Bernstein, choreographed by Elizabeth Oates, with musical direction by Mark Allan Rethman, Seussical plays Thursday, July 31 and Saturday, August 2 at 7PM.

Summer on Stage performances take place at the Temple of Music and Art, located at 330 S. Scott Avenue in downtown Tucson. Doors open at 6:30 PM. Performances are free and open to the public. Reservations are not required.

Summer on Stage is a five week actor training program is produced by Arizona Theatre Company, the state's leading professional theatre company, and the nationally recognized University of Arizona School of Theatre Arts. Participants learn a variety of acting techniques including character development, voice for the actor, scene and monologue study, movement and dance. Students are educated through classroom work, and an intensive rehearsal process leads to two fully mounted productions performed at the Temple of Music and Art, the home of Arizona Theatre Company.

Summer on Stage 2008 is funded in part by Cox Charities and The Max and Victoria Dreyfus Foundation.
