ARIZONA THEATRE COMPANY ANNOUNCES CAFÉ BOHEMIA: A NEW PLAY READING SERIES

Experience original plays on Second Saturdays in Downtown Tucson at The Temple Lounge

Arizona Theatre Company announces Café Bohemia, a season of play readings, jams and ideas; featuring diverse new works from bold and inventive playwrights. Café Bohemia invites audiences to The Temple Lounge at the Temple of Music and Art in downtown Tucson, a comfortable and intimate space to participate in the new play process, to hear works read aloud by the best local and national actors.

The playwrights of these exciting new works will be present at the readings as they continue to develop their scripts. Tucson audiences are invited to enter the dramatic process at its inception, being among the first people in the world to hear these stories come to life, investing in the future of the American theatre by starting relationships with new playwrights and new audiences.  Café Bohemia is sponsored by Providence Service Corporation. The fee is $5 for general admission with limited seating available.

"Café Bohemia is a space for new voices, sharing ideas and asking questions," said ATC Associate Artistic Director Stephen Wrentmore. "It partners and reflects our main stage season, but also offers an opportunity for us to spotlight a new generation of artists with our audiences. In the relaxed environment of The Temple Lounge we get to hear readings of 6 new plays and share our response. What I love is the transparency of process and the excitement of creating a play-jam. It offers a rough and ready authentic response to a play by a group of talented actors who are responding, like a jam session, to the play as they read it. And with the continued commitment of ATC in supporting the Latino Playwriting Award and the Arizona Playwriting Award these works could become nationally significant over time."

Tucson: Shakespeare in the Park - “THE MERCHANT OF VENICE”

-----Original Message-----

TUCSON COMMUNITY THEATRE PRESENTS:
"THE MERCHANT OF VENICE"
by William Shakespeare

The El Rio Theatre Project will present its 5th annual Shakespeare in the Park with one of Shakespeare's most controversial plays, The Merchant of Venice at the Himmel Park Outdoor Amphitheatre, 1000 N. Tucson Blvd. Performances are scheduled for Sept 16-18, 22-25 & 29-Oct. 2. Curtain time is 7 p.m. for all performances; the event is free to the public, with a suggested donation of $5. Bring a blanket, a picnic basket and the whole family, and enjoy an evening of Theatre in the park.

In 16th century Venice, when a merchant must default on a large loan from an abused Jewish moneylender for a friend with romantic ambitions, the bitterly vengeful creditor demands a gruesome payment instead.
Shakespeare concocted Shylock as a comic villain, but he went far beyond caricature to create a complex human being struggling with conflicting motives.

The Merchant of Venice, has been arousing controversies for centuries with raucous and gentle comedy, tender poetry, and its struggle with mercy and justice. At the same time, this is a clearly a play in great demand with major productions on Broadway, Colorado Springs & the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon. In this production we are
hoping to depict the impact of society on a man and his beliefs that has molded him to do what he feels he must do.

RAISING JUNIOR

SUSPENSE: The Dark Tower

Raising Junior was a 15-minute comedy-strip show broadcast on the Blue Network from 1930-32. The show was heard daily, six days a week at 6 p. m. A domestic comedy, its major claim to fame was the discovery of Walter Tetley as a major radio character. Actor Ray Knight snatched the 9-year-old Tetley off an elevator and placed him before a microphone when the actor who was to play Bobby failed to appear. Tetley went on to appear on thousands of broadcasts (over 2,300 appearances on 150 separate series) in the late ‘30’s. He appeared on such notable shows as The Fred Allen Show, Easy Aces, The Great Gildersleeve, and The Phil Harris/Alice Faye Show.

Suspense was one of the premier drama series of the Golden Age of Radio,  broadcast on CBS Radio from 1942 through 1962. Subtitled "radio's outstanding theater of thrills," it focused on suspense thriller-type scripts, usually featuring leading Hollywood actors of the era. Approximately 945 episodes were broadcast during its long run, and more than 900 still exist. Suspense went through several major phases, characterized by different hosts, sponsors, and director/producers. Formula plot devices were followed for all but a handful of episodes: the protagonist was usually a normal person suddenly dropped into a threatening or bizarre situation; solutions were "withheld until the last possible second"; and evildoers were usually punished in the end. This lighter episode, The Dark Tower, was adapted from a story by George S. Kaufman and Alexander Wolcott, and starred Orson Welles as a parody of himself.

EASY ACES: Jane Thinks Mink

ESCAPE: The Abominable Snowman

Easy Aces, a long-running American serial radio comedy, ran from 1930-1945. It was trademarked by the low-keyed drollery of creator and writer Goodman Ace and his wife, Jane, as an urbane, put-upon realtor and his malaprop-prone wife. A 15-minute program, it aired three times at week at first and later, twice a week for 30 minutes. Its unobtrusive, conversational, and clever style, and the cheerful absurdism of its story-lines, built a loyal enough audience of listeners and critics alike to keep it on the air for 15 years. “The laughs on the other foot.”

ESCAPE was first performed on September 13, 1953. The famous opening to the show, often worded to suit the events of the moment or season, warns the intrepid radio listener of adventure that is anything but... everyday. Like its sister show on the radio, Suspense, it is considered one of the top shows ever done on radio. Escape takes you on a ride into a world where danger comes in many forms, and you are on the edge of life and death, and perhaps you are being pushed! When Escape says romantic, we're not talking kissing, perhaps those kisses might be from teeming piranha! Escape is more Devil's Island than Fantasy Island. And it is wonderful adventure radio for the whole family, especially Dad.

The Abominable Snowman begins in Darjeeling, India as three men are about to embark on an expedition to capture one of the Yeti, the mysterious creatures reported by mountain climbing expeditions in the Himalayas since the early Twentieth Century. They hire a sherpa guide named Nasang who claims to have seen one. We learn from Nasang that the Yeti, also called the "Metoh-Kangmi", have evil faces. Nasang informs them that he is unable to hire any porters for their expedition because the locals are afraid of upsetting the Yeti, who are cannibals. So, the four men start climbing Mt. Everest on their own. One by one, their small expedition faces the challenges of the mountain and an Abominable Snowman. They sometimes leap and sometimes they run in great strides. He warns them that trying to capture one "will be a difficult thing." Tired of the everyday grind? Ever dream of a life of … romantic adventure? Want to get away from it all? We offer you … ESCAPE!

Directed by Sheldon Metz, the OTRT Ensemble Company includes: Jon Benda, Denise Blum, Butch Bryant, Samantha Cormier, Gerri Courtney-Austein, Laura Davenport, Samuel DeJesus, Evan Engle, Bill Epstein, Sydney Flynn, Vince Flynn, Audrey Ann Gambach, Brian Hale, Meagan Jones, Elizabeth Leadon, Lois Lederman, Butch Lynn, Steve McKee, Charlie Middagh, Whitney Morton, Joan O’Dwyer, Robert Anthony Peters, Shannon Brooke Rzucidlo, Mike Saxon, Ina Shivak, Pat Timm, Terry Thure, Jared Stokes,  John Vornholt.

Beowulf Alley Theatre announces the opening play of their 2011-2012 season, Rough Crossing, by Tom Stoppard with select music by Andre Previn and directed by Dave Sewell. It’s the late 1920s and the famous playwrighting team of Turai and Gal are onboard the cruise liner Italian Castle bound for New York. They are facing a deadline: the final act of their next smash hit is not yet finished, and their young composer and protégé, Adam Adam is hitting rough seas with his fiancée, Natasha Navratilova, the love interest in the play. It seems Natasha has just rekindled a romance with former boyfriend and current co-star Ivor Fish, and Adam is about to tear up the score and jump ship. Will Turai and Gal avert disaster, calm their neurotic composer and finish the play before ship arrives in New York? Of course they will: it’s a romping 20s-style farce! The hero may well turn out to be Dvornichek, the amazingly resourceful cabin steward with the unpronounceable name.

When asked why he wanted present this play to Tucson audiences, Director Dave Sewell replied, “Rough Crossing features a delectable assemblage of show business egos, preposterous situations, and silly musical numbers delivered in a semi-coherent but hilarious soufflé by acclaimed British playwright Tom Stoppard. The inspiration for this insanity comes from Ferenc Molnar’s Play at the Castle. Stoppard adapted Molnar’s script and contributed lyrics to musical numbers scored by noted composer/conductor Andre Previn. The result could best be described as no less than a retro-romp on the high seas! I think we need a little comedy. Don’t you?”

The playwright, Tom Stoppard, born Tomas Straussler, is a Czech-born British playwright. He is considered to be a master of comic invention, visual humor, and remarkably witty wordplay, using his considerable skills to investigate philosophical questions in an extremely entertaining manner. After living in East Asia with his family during World War II, he moved to England and adopted his stepfather's surname. His first play, A Walk on the Water, was televised in 1963, and he won fame with the absurdist Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead (1966; film, 1990). His later plays, marked by verbal brilliance, ingenious plotting, and a playful interest in pivotal historical moments, include Jumpers (1972), Every Good Boy Deserves Favour (1977; with music by André Previn), The Real Thing (1982), and Arcadia (1993). He has also written radio plays and screenplays for films such as Empire of the Sun (1987) and Shakespeare in Love (1998, Academy Award). Stoppard was knighted in 1997.

Dave Sewell has over thirty-five years of theatre experience. A native of Southern California, Dave received his degree in Theatre from the University of California, Riverside. He has directed over thirty productions and participated in countless others as an actor, set designer, production manager or technician. Since moving to Tucson in 1995, Dave has worked with Catalina Players, Desert Players, Old Pueblo Playwrights, Stark Naked Productions, Tucson Theatre Ensemble, and Stories that Soar! He has directed plays in a wide variety of genres, including Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, ‘night, Mother, Measure for Measure, Galileo, and Deathtrap, among others, and has designed many of the sets for the shows he has directed. For Beowulf, Dave has directed Arcadia, Wait Until Dark, and The First Third, and this past season Dave directed and co-designed The Transylvanian Clockworks. Dave also has experience in nonprofit theatre management, having served as board member, managing director, and grant writer, among other roles. Dave currently serves on Beowulf Alley’s Artistic Development Committee.

The cast includes Bree Boyd-Martin, Matt Brown, Richard Chaney, Amy Gallegos, Bri Giger, Brian Hale, Shannon Rzucidlo, David Swisher, and David Zinke.

The production team includes Jim Ambrosek, Susan Arnold, SaraLynn Cano, Bill Dell, Bill Galbreath, Meagan Jones and Taryn Wintersteen.

Local filmmaker duo currently casting for an upcoming comedy production about a young man who is ready to move on from his home town and routine life.

Character is in his 30's, light black or latino, well spoken, pimp-like, suave and carries a cocky, confident swag.

Please consider that we would prefer to work with someone who:
-Has weekend availability (and possibly weekday evenings)
-Has transportation
-Has some experience in acting (or thinks they are a great actor)

The postion doesn't pay, but that doesn't mean it wont pay off! This will be a great experience, with a great line-up cast thus far! We look forward to auditions.

Waypoint Theatre Company, southern Arizona’s faith-based theatre organization, proudly presents their 2011-2012 season opener, September Bears, from multiple award winning playwright, Jeff Barker.  The inspirational drama will be produced at Waypoint’s performance venue, Atria Bell Court Gardens’ Academy Hall Theatre,    6653 East Carondelet Drive (northeast of St. Joseph’s Medical Center),  for one week, September 7-11, 2011.

After the devastating events of September 11, 2001, one child in a Manhattan classroom needed a hug.  Sue Lucarelli—“Mama Luc”—hugged him and gave him a teddy bear to hold.  What evolved was a spontaneous national love story in which over 68,000 teddy bears were placed in the arms of New York’s children and thousands of recovery workers.  Inspired by actual events, poems and reflections of those at Ground Zero, September Bears is a tender, often humorous and deeply poignant dramatization of faith and hope in the midst of adversity.  The play speaks to the hope and goodness that rose from the tragedy and the birth of the national non-profit organization, Hugs Across America—that offers teddy bears to those children in crisis throughout the USA.

September Bears was performed off-Broadway at the Lamb’s Theater, St. Paul’s Chapel at the World Trade Center site, continues nationwide touring, and was performed by Waypoint Theatre in 2004 in Tucson.  Waypoint regulars Melanie David, Tynan Haggard-Schoolman and Frank Gates with Sue Zepeda, Sarah Deardorff, Jesse Boone, Shaylynn Lakser and Isaiah Unruh portray  over 30 characters including Sue Lucarelli firefighters, teachers, 5 students, a pastor, priest, rabbi, and others. Waypoint is pleased to offer again September Bears, commemorating the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks with the hope of continued healing for our community and country.

Waypoint will be partnering with another local, non-profit—P.A.W.S. Auxiliary of the Assistance League of Tucson in collecting new donated teddy bears to benefit local children in crisis in the Tucson area.  The P.A.W.S. program has grown in the past 20 years to serving 22 law enforcement, social agencies and hospitals throughout southern Arizona.  More than 20,000 bears have been given to children in times of crisis and need  through P.A.W.S. Program Teddy Bear. Teddy bears are available for purchase at a discounted rate from Build A Bear Workshop at the Tucson Mall.  Discount bear passes are available online through Sept. 20 at Waypoint’s website:  www.waypoint-theatre.org.  More information about  P.A.W.S. online:
