Waypoint Theatre Company, southern Arizona’s faith-based theatre organization, proudly presents their 2011-2012 season opener, September Bears, from multiple award winning playwright, Jeff Barker.  The inspirational drama will be produced at Waypoint’s performance venue, Atria Bell Court Gardens’ Academy Hall Theatre,    6653 East Carondelet Drive (northeast of St. Joseph’s Medical Center),  for one week, September 7-11, 2011.

After the devastating events of September 11, 2001, one child in a Manhattan classroom needed a hug.  Sue Lucarelli—“Mama Luc”—hugged him and gave him a teddy bear to hold.  What evolved was a spontaneous national love story in which over 68,000 teddy bears were placed in the arms of New York’s children and thousands of recovery workers.  Inspired by actual events, poems and reflections of those at Ground Zero, September Bears is a tender, often humorous and deeply poignant dramatization of faith and hope in the midst of adversity.  The play speaks to the hope and goodness that rose from the tragedy and the birth of the national non-profit organization, Hugs Across America—that offers teddy bears to those children in crisis throughout the USA.

September Bears was performed off-Broadway at the Lamb’s Theater, St. Paul’s Chapel at the World Trade Center site, continues nationwide touring, and was performed by Waypoint Theatre in 2004 in Tucson.  Waypoint regulars Melanie David, Tynan Haggard-Schoolman and Frank Gates with Sue Zepeda, Sarah Deardorff, Jesse Boone, Shaylynn Lakser and Isaiah Unruh portray  over 30 characters including Sue Lucarelli firefighters, teachers, 5 students, a pastor, priest, rabbi, and others. Waypoint is pleased to offer again September Bears, commemorating the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks with the hope of continued healing for our community and country.

Waypoint will be partnering with another local, non-profit—P.A.W.S. Auxiliary of the Assistance League of Tucson in collecting new donated teddy bears to benefit local children in crisis in the Tucson area.  The P.A.W.S. program has grown in the past 20 years to serving 22 law enforcement, social agencies and hospitals throughout southern Arizona.  More than 20,000 bears have been given to children in times of crisis and need  through P.A.W.S. Program Teddy Bear. Teddy bears are available for purchase at a discounted rate from Build A Bear Workshop at the Tucson Mall.  Discount bear passes are available online through Sept. 20 at Waypoint’s website:  www.waypoint-theatre.org.  More information about  P.A.W.S. online:
