"Come for the fun of it!"

September 2011

"The Comedy Genius of O. Henry"
 Comes to The Comedy Playhouse
Starting September 2

"The Comedy Genius of O. Henry" will open at The Comedy Playhouse on Friday September 2nd. This will be the third in the very successful "The Comedy Genius of…" series William Sydney Porter was born in 1862 in North Carolina.  After trying his hand at several different careers, including a run in with the law in Texas, Porter began writing short stories while he was serving time in prison.  He also began using the penname O. Henry, because a convict had little hope of ever getting his works published.  The first story published with the penname O. Henry was Whistling Dick's Christmas Stocking in the December 1899 issue of McClure's Magazine.  He was released from prison after 3 years in July of 1901, with time shortened for good behavior.  He moved to New York in 1902 to be near his publishers.

His stories can be divided into two groups, namely his stories set in Texas and his stories set in New York.  In either case, O. Henry had a knack for bringing to life the talk and the stories of regular people.  As you listen to the performance of his works, notice the way he captures the Old West and Turn-of-the-Century New York.  From the cowboy to the policeman, he had an ear for the language and the ability to put it down on the page in his stories.

Of course, O. Henry is famous for his surprise twist endings, but don't ignore the wit and charm he weaves into his narrations.  He was able to create a character in just a few sentences.  He revealed his characters in what they said, and how they said it.

I invite you all to enjoy Nell Summers, Drew Kallen, Tony Eckstat, Alan Gordon and myself, Bruce Bieszki as we present "The Comedy Genius of O. Henry."

"The Comedy Genius of O. Henry" will run for only 5 performances from September 2nd to September 10th. Performances will be Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30 and Sunday afternoon at 3:00 (only one matinee).   Admission is only $12.00 with discounts available for seniors and students.

"The Comedy Genius of" series is becoming popular.  I had to turn people away for the last two performances.  I HATE THAT! Don't get left out of the fun.  Make your reservations early!

Catch the Comedy Classic

Box and Cox

Starting September 16

Mrs. Bouncer has a room to rent.  Mrs. Bouncer has schemed to collect double the rent on the room.  She rents it by day to Mr. Box, a printer who works by night.  And she rents the same room by night to Mr. Cox, a hatter who works by day.  This is the day the two men meet.

That is the set up to John Maddison Morton's comedy classic, Box and Cox.  This play was wildly popular with audiences, including a command performance before Queen Victoria.  Arthur Sullivan (of Gilbert and Sullivan fame) and F. C. Burnand adapted it into a one-act comic opera.

  J. Striling Coyne wrote a sequel Box and Cox: Married and Settled.  It is now two years later and Messrs. Box and Cox find themselves unexpectedly in the very same room again.  Now, however, each is married and each has brought his wife along to work through a whole new series of misunderstangs.

Jon Benda is Cox, Bruce Bieszki is Box and Lois Letterman is Mrs. Bouncer with Callie Hutchinson and Lilly Delamare in The Comedy Playhouse presentation of Box and Cox.  Admission is $18.00 with discounts available.  Box and Cox will run September 16 through October 16.  Performances will be Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30pm and Sunday afternoons at 3:00pm.
