Chilling Mysteries of

Edgar Allen Poe

Opens October 21st

The Comedy Playhouse Halloween show, Chilling Mysteries of Edgar Allen Poe will open Friday October 21st.  The show will consist of five of Poe's classic stories presented in five different ways. The Pit and The Pendulum, The Cask of Amontillado, and The Tell-Tale Heart, are among the stories that will be presented.  Also included will be a selection of Poe's poetry.

Edgar Allen Poe (1809-1849) considered himself, foremost, to be a literary critic.  However, history has determined that his contributions to other kinds of literature may indeed have been more important.  Poe was influential in creating the concept of the "short story."  Poe is also credited with the invention of the detective story for his The Murders at the Rue Morgue.  Poe's detective Auguste Dupin, also appears in Poe's other detective stories The Mystery of Marie Roget and The Purloined Letter.  In addition, Poe dabbled in science fiction with The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket, which tells the tale of an adventure in the South Pole region.

Still, Poe is held in highest regard for his suspense and mystery stories.  Join Drew Kallen, Colin Roberts, Mike Saxon, Cristin Phibbs and Bruce Bieszki as The Comedy Playhouse presents Chilling Mysteries of Edgar Allen Poe.  Admission is $18, with discounts available.  Chilling Mysteries of Edgar Allen Poe plays October 21 to November 12th.  .  Performances will be Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30pm and Sunday afternoons at 3:00pm.

Coming in November…

Box and Cox
 Continues Until October 15

The comedy classic Box and Cox continues at The Comedy Playhouse until October 15th.  Written in 1847 Box and Cox was wildly popular at its introduction.  The popularity of Box and Cox eventually reached the ears of Queen Victoria and a command performance was given at Windsor Castle in January of 1849.  Queen Victoria like it so much, Box and Cox was performed again for the Queen and Prince Albert in 1850.

Arthur Sullivan (of Gilbert and Sullivan fame) wrote the music and F. C. Burnand wrote the libretto for a musical adaptation entitled Cox and Box.  The production was Sullivan's first produced comic opera.  Walter Parke and Louise Barone readapted Box and Cox into still another comic operetta Daye and Knight.

Here's the story.    Mrs. Bouncer has a room to rent.  Mrs. Bouncer has schemed to collect double the rent on the room.  She rents it by day to Mr. Box, a printer who works by night.  And she rents the same room by night to Mr. Cox, a hatter who works by day.  This is the day the two men meet.

In 1851, James Stirling wrote a sequel entitled Box and Cox:  Married and Settled.  It is now three years later and Messrs. Box and Cox find themselves unexpectedly in the very same room again.  Both Box and Cox are now married and each has brought his wife along to work through a whole new series of misunderstandings.

Jon Benda is Cox, Bruce Bieszki is Box and Lois Letterman is Mrs. Bouncer with Callie Hutchinson and Lilly Delamare in The Comedy Playhouse presentation of Box and Cox.  Admission is $18.00 with discounts available.  Box and Cox will run September 16 through October 15.  Performances will be Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30pm and Sunday afternoons at 3:00pm.

The Comedy Genius

Of Edna Ferber

The Comedy Playhouse will present The Comedy Genius of Edna Ferber November 18th to 26th.  It will be the fourth in the popular series The Comedy Genius of… Performances will be Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30pm and Sunday afternoon at 3:00pm.  Admission is $12 with discounts available.

Today Edna Ferber is remembered for her landmark novels such as So Big, Cimarron, Showboat and Giant.  She also collaborated with George Kaufman to create the plays Stage Door, The Royal Family and Dinner at Eight. Few remember she began her literary career as a journalist and short story writer.

She wrote her first short story, The Homely Heroine, while convalescing from a breakdown caused by overwork.  She gained national attention for her Emma McChesney short stories.  Emma McChesney was a traveling saleswoman, and the stories about her told the tales of the "traveling salesman" from the woman's perspective.  Eventually, she cobbled several Emma McChesney stories together to create the play Our Mrs. McChesney, a vehicle for Ethel Barrymore.
