About Kevin J. Thornton
An Evening with Kevin J. Thornton is a throwback to the golden age of entertainers on the vaudeville circuit -- he sings poignant songs and tells hilarious jokes but the twist is, Thornton is anything but old fashioned. This comedian’s stories comment on sexuality (the straight and gay kind), religion and American life in a new century.
Returning to Beowulf Alley Theatre tonight only, after a successful run during the 2011 Tucson Fringe Festival, Kevin will entertain you with new materials, some he’s perfected after 8 months of touring, as well as some of his favorite songs from prior shows and personal favorites. If you loved him in or missed him last March, don’t miss this event!
Tucson is part of a 2011, 15-city tour in which Thornton has already won the Audience Choice Award for Favorite Show and the Fringe Crush Award in Orlando as well as the Cincinnati Acclaim Award for Best Writing and Performance. Earlier this year the prolific songwriter released his latest recording “January Dream” which includes a Kacey Musgraves (Nashville Star) co-write, Up to No Good and recorded the EP with 2-time Grammy nominee Mark Chevalier (Margaret Cho).
Thornton has been living on the road since February 2011 performing in 10 Fringe Festivals as well as theaters and clubs across the country. The playwright’s 2011 Fringe Festival piece, I Love You (We’re F*#ked), opened in February at the NYC Frigid Festival then debuted at Tucson, Phoenix, Orlando, Kansas City and Minnesota Fringe Festivals. Thornton appears for the first time at the San Francisco Fringe Festival the week before he hits Tucson.
The storyteller, who has been compared to David Sedaris with a guitar, returned to DC’s Capital, Indianapolis and Cincinnati Fringe Festivals this year where he first explored his fusion-style of performance with his 2009 Sex, Dreams & Self Control. That national tour caught the attention of the LA Times and NPR's All Things Considered.
Matthew J. Palm, theater critic for the Orlando Sentinel, called Thornton “an enthusiastic musician, a quick-witted comic and a really funny storyteller” and Cincinnati’s CityBeat said “he kept the audience in the palm of his hand during the sold out performance... he’s a fast-talking, high-energy powerhouse of a performer.
The multi-instrumentalist performs on his Grandfather’s 1954 Gibson ES-125 found after his death in near mint condition with a 1954 receipt stuck underneath the strings. On the receipt was written, “Promises to pay $5 a week.”
The self-proclaimed “gay male Oprah” has a weekly Podcast, Strange Dreamz with Kevin J. Thornton, an active blog on his website http://www.thekevinthornton.com and a business blog with manager Carol Buttenham. Thornton and Buttenham discuss their insights on the entertainment business, what has worked for them creating the Kevin J.
