Tucson, Arizona--Pima Community College Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Mark Nelson, opens its fall season with an eclectic mix of concert band standards, appearances by the woodwind, brass and percussion ensembles, and a tuba solo by Dr. Nelson. This is his first time as the featured soloist with the Wind Ensemble since becoming the director of bands in 2000. He performs the 1886 tuba solo “Beelzelbub” by Andrea V. Catozzi, with brass ensemble coach Victor Valenzuela guest conducting. Other program highlights include Robert Smith’s “Africa: Ceremony, Song and Ritual,” Australian composer Percy Grainger’s “Irish Tune from County Derry” and “Shepherd’s Hey,” and Gary Ziek’s “Quintology, The Science of Five” (composed just last year). Rounding out the band program is “Black Horse Troop” by John Philip Sousa and “Suite for Band” by Harold Pottenger.
Pima Community College Center for the Arts is located on the West Campus at 2202 West Anklam Road, Tucson (just west of downtown). For ticket information contact the box office at 206-6986, www.pima.edu/cfa or centerforthearts@pima.edu <mailto:centerforthearts@pima.edu>
