Tucson, Arizona--Pima Community College Theatre Arts launches the 2012-2013 season with the warm and humorous family production, THE JUNGLE BOOK adapted by Joseph Robinette, based on the book by Rudyard Kipling. Directed by Mickey Nugent. Public performances are Fri. and Sat. at 7 p.m.; Sat. and Sun. at 2 p.m. ASL interpreters are available Oct. 5. Tickets are $6. Jungle Jamboree, a free community event for families, features activities, treats and scenes from the play Sat., September 22 from 9-11 a.m. in the Black Box Theatre.

 

Narrated by the young Rudyard Kipling, Mowgli and Shere Khan’s thrilling story is brought to life on stage set against the backdrop of Kipling’s actual childhood journey from his home in Bombay to a British boarding school. Though young Kipling’s new classmates tease him for being different, his teachers are kind and encourage him to write. His story of Mowgli, the Indian boy raised by caring wolves in the jungles of India withBagheera, the panther, Baloo, the bear and the menacing tiger Shere Kahn, parallels his struggles with the troublesome rivals at school. Along the way both young Rudyard and Mowgli learn lessons of strength and understanding. The play touches on the subject of school bullying, the worth of friendship, the importance of loyalty and other values required for surviving in the jungle. The fast-paced nonstop action, colorful jungle scenery and plenty of energetic animals are sure to keep the younger audiences enthralled and the older audience connected. Director Nugent exclaims, “I can not wait to bring THE JUNGLE BOOK alive onstage here at Pima. It's such an exciting tale to tell! The themes of family awareness and working to help one another to prevent mean spiritedness, demonstrates hope for making the world accept tolerance. I can not wait!”
