The Seduction of Grandma

The Daggott family returns for more swampland shenanigans in The Seduction of Grandma, a follow-up story to Let's Kill Grandpa.

Grandma is making sweet potato pecan pie, a Southern comfort food and a favorite of the Daggott clan.  But when Grandma makes gumbo AND sweet potato pecan pie in the same day, that can only mean that Grandma is plotting something.  It's up to Elle, Jackson, and Wanda Jo to figure out what that something is.  Could it have anything to do with the frequent visits from Anderson Weatherby III, the travelling substitute funeral director of Heavenly Transitions Funeral Home?  What are Grandma's dealings with Zydeco musician Sharky Post?  Just exactly how many people have read Grandma's revealing Facebook posts?  It's up to the grandkids and their friends to find out what Grandma is up to before the household is shaken to the roots.

The Seduction of Grandma opens on June 3, 2016 and runs through July 10, 2016, Friday and Saturday at 7:30 and Sunday at 3:00.

Don't forget to make your reservations for A Pair of Comedy Shorts, playing now at The Comedy Playhouse!!  The performance features two one-act plays; Box and Cox, by James Maddison Morton, and Passion, Poison, and Petrification: The Fatal Gasogene, by George Bernard Shaw.  The show is directed by Bruce Bieszki.  You can call Nell at 520-270-9310 to make your reservations.  The show will run every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday through May 22, 2016.

St. Francis Theatre presents

Agatha Christie's Mystery Masterpiece

THE MOUSETRAP

Directed by Michael Wilkinson

The Mousetrap is the longest running play in theatre history.  And for good reason. The much celebrated Queen of Mystery, Dame Agatha Christie, has created a masterpiece of shuddering suspense with a brilliantly intricate plot where murder lurks around every corner.

The scene of The Mousetrap is set when a group of people gathered in a country house cut off by the snow discover, to their horror, that there is a murderer in their midst. Who can it be? One by one the suspicious characters reveal their sordid pasts until at the last, nerve-shredding moment the identity and the motive are finally revealed.

If you have never seen this exemplary mother of all whodunit's, written by the greatest crime writer of all time, now is your chance.  And if you have had the pleasure of seeing The Mousetrap before, you won't want to miss the opportunity to relive the thrilling twists and turns of one of the most engaging plays of all time.

"LEVELING UP" QUESTIONS DIGITAL REALITY

By Chuck Graham, TucsonStage.com

Is this the video game room...or the war room?

When the technology of electricity developed industrial and residential applications in the 19thcentury, it changed the world forever. Back in those early days, virtually anything seemed possible through electricity.

Mary Shelley's “Frankenstein” is still the iconic metaphor defining the fear of taking electricity too far.

Now our own early years of digital technology are having the same impact on the 21stcentury, twisting it into possibilities unimagined until now.

Which makes the hypnotic seduction of rapidly evolving video games with their super-real visual effects the perfect subject for the precocious members of Acting Innocent theater company in their production of “Leveling Up' by Deborah Zoe Laufer.

The subject isn't video games, but the nature of reality. Somehow, watching these high school kids lose themselves in their neon-bright screen worlds where killing people is a way to keep score has a power you just don't get from reading the books of learned philosophers.

Even more poignant is the experience of dedicated gamer Ian (Vaughn Sherman), tapped by the National Security Agency to fly drones for the American military, when he realizes the little figures on his screen are real people. It feels like he is playing a video game, but he is in fact killing somebody's fathers and sons.

This is the heart of “Leveling Up,” a gamer term that means taking your game to the next level. On stage in an unkempt apartment cluttered with empty beverage containers, old pizza boxes and similar fast food detritus is a tattered couch, a well-worn chair, a table with a laptop and some other stuff.

The gamers are the intensely serious Ian, whose video skills get him hired by the National Security Agency, Chuck (Guy Norris) who is also interested in Jeannie (Stefanie Tedards) and Zander (Griffin Johnston) strung out between the reality he wants and the reality he gets. Johnston is also the director, getting natural performances from his cast.

What would be the adult version of a tweener? People who are not yet adults, but have put adolescence behind them some time ago.

They have grown up meeting online, shopping online, visiting every possible corner of the globe, mountaintop and sea online. And of course, waging battle and finding love among the many alien worlds in outer space.

They love the immediacy of their virtual world and their virtual friends, but worry right here in their parents' house because they also know virtual reality isn't real. It's just virtual.

But maybe it's a different kind of real. Or maybe it is just a digital promise of something that can never be fulfilled.

Ever up for a real world challenge, all the cast members stay onstage after each performance to discuss the issues the play brings up. The evening I attended, the performance and the discussion afterward were equally engaging.

“Leveling Up” runs through Sunday, May 1, with performances at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $15 at the door.

A special late show is set for Friday at 10:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 for that one.

SNAPPY "PICTURES" HAS NEIL SIMON'S HUMOR AND HEART

By Chuck Graham, TucsonStage.com

Top of the cream actors (from L) Susan Kovitz, David Alexander Johnston and Lucille Petty stir up Invisible Theatre's "I Ought To Be in Pictures."

There was life before cell phones and laptops. We know this because Invisible Theater is playing Neil Simon's “I Ought To Be in Pictures,” with actors using an actual typewriter and a telephone.

Kind of a shock to see, especially that typewriter. So noisy. How can a writer think with all that clatter going on?

No matter. From out of all this low tech chaos, director Susan Claassen and associate director Fred Rodriguez have created a lighter-than-air comedy laced with loving sentiment in a top cream cast of Lucille Petty, David Alexander Johnston and Susan Kovitz.

Simon's play debuted in 1980, telling the story of Herb (Alexander) who ran away from his New York wife and family in the early Sixties, beating the hippies to California and starting his arty life in Los Angeles as a writer for TV and the movies.

The play opens with the arrival at Herb's cluttered West Hollywood bungalow of his feisty 19-year-old daughter Libby (Petty).

This is a huge break-out performance for Petty. The role calls for her to enter as a petulant teen angry at this father who abandoned her without a second thought and never made any attempt to stay in touch.

Working her way through fifty shades of outward revenge and hidden remorse, Petty is always completely believable. She does this with a genuine inner energy, the soulful kind, not just a lot of jittery surface body language.

Johnston, for his part, matches her scene for scene as the man who has been her reluctant father for 16 years, feeling guilty but not guilty enough to make amends.

Once the belligerent daughter and this blustering defensive father see each other face to face, you can feel them both begin to change. It isn't something you see, but something you feel out in the audience.

Providing the balance in this ensemble trio is Kovitz as Steffy, the free-love girlfriend of Herb, willing to bide her time without any strings attached. Within the play's plot machinations, she becomes the straight-person for both Libby and Herb.

This is Neil Simon, after all. Jokes are the rye bread and sauerkraut that holds everything together. The lack of a decent delicatessen in Los Angeles becomes a running joke for Herb, ever a New Yorker at heart.

What we get is an evening of excellent theater with lots of bubbly fizz but, down under the ice cubes, a touching insistence on the importance of family.

“I Ought To Be in Pictures” continues through May 1 with performances at 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays, 3 p.m. Sundays, at Invisible Theatre, 1400 N. First Ave. An additional 3 p.m. matinee is April 30. All tickets are $30. For details and reservations, 882-9721, or visit invisibletheatre.com

"BRIDGE OF SAN LUIS REY" IS MAGNIFICENT

By Chuck Graham, TucsonStage.com

Ryan Parker Knox as Captain Alvarado (L) and Christopher Johnson as Esteban.

The daring Rogue Theatre Company gambled big, very big, in adapting Thornton Wilder's “The Bridge of San Luis Rey” to its magical minimalist stage.

Then the gamble paid off even bigger on opening weekend as the Rogue's mercurial cast triumphed with its most sweeping, deeply emotional and captivating production ever.

This relatively new company now has its grip on Tucson's committed theater community, developing over the past few years a reputation for converting complicated material into the most gracefully accessible productions of eclectic choices from unexpected places.

“The Bridge of San Luis Rey” caps all that and then some. This is an achievement of considerable difficulty considering at least half the 2 1/2-hour play is narration spoken by actors directly to the audience.

The rest is a series of richly imagined scenes hung like a string of pearls on this textured tale that 11 cast members pass among themselves like story tellers around a campfire.

Rogue co-founder Cynthia Meier did the adaptation, shaping Wilder's text for a dark brown stage design of several levels, dominated by a bridge broken in the middle, its wide chasm emphasizing the random emptiness of chance.

That bridge was in Peru, a woven rope bridge on a major thoroughfare that had served everyone well for centuries until noon on Friday, July 20, 1714, when the bridge suddenly snapped and five people fell to their deaths through no fault of their own.

A humble priest, Brother Juniper (Ryan Parker Knox), was determined to find the hand of God in this senseless tragedy. He spent six years patiently interviewing everyone who had any connection to the five who died.

The heart of the play presents the lives of each one and how they came to be on the bridge at that exact moment. Was God directing them, intervening with coincidence, letting their deaths play out as one small part of His master plan?

As director, Joseph McGrath -- the Rogue's other founder -- achieves the delicate balance of matching these lives with their individual fates. In the process Kathryn Kellner Brown gives a defining performance as the physically twisted Marquesa Dona Maria, a woman gifted with ugliness.

So unpleasing is her appearance, even her own daughter must look away...and then run away to Spain. But the Marquesa insists on loving her daughter deeply, continuing for years to write her letters of exquisite beauty.

Also strong is Marissa Garcia as the famed entertainer Camila Perichole who happily teased and taunted her audiences, especially her male admirers – an Ice Queen of deep zero heartlessness. Later in life when Perichole became a magnet for misfortune, Garcia gave us those moments in equal measure.

Returning to the Rogue stage after a long absence is Christopher Johnson in a smaller role as the troubled Esteban.

It is good to see him back.

Appropriately perhaps, God's will and the passing of time have not been kind to Thornton Wilder's “The Bridge of San Luis Rey.” Considered one of the most influential novels of the 20th century, its influence has been shredded by the ensuing culture wars and 21stcentury technology.

No matter. Whether you think it is spelled “San Luis Ray” or “San Luis Rey,” go see this Rogue Theatre production. Years from now people will still be talking about it.

“The Bridge of San Luis Rey” runs through May 8, with performances at 7:30 p.m. Thusdays through Saturdays, 2 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, at the Rogue Theatre, 300 E. University Blvd.

All tickets are $35. For details and reservations, 551-2053, or visit theroguetheatre.org

You are invited to Ballet Rincon's beautiful production of Cinderella!

As the story begins, Cinderella is found dreaming of happier times when her mother was still alive. She has been made a slave by her stepmother and demanding stepsisters in her own home. A beggar woman appears at the window, begging for food. Cinderella's stepmother forbids her to give out food, so Cinderella offers her own food to the woman, leaving nothing to eat for herself.

An invitation arrives from the palace, inviting the women of the kingdom to the Prince's Royal Ball at which he will chose a bride. Cinderella's stepmother forbids Cinderella to go, leaving her behind that night.

The beggar woman reappears, transforming herself into Cinderella's fairy godmother. With the help of the magical fairies, she  creates a beautiful princess dress, transforms a pumpkin into a carriage, and the mice into horses. She gives her a pair of glass slippers, sending her to the ball, ordering her to return home before the clock strikes midnight, when the spell will end.

When the Prince lays eyes on Cinderella, he is enchanted. The stepsisters try to win his attention, but he is interested only in Cinderella, who loses track of time. As the clock chimes midnight, she flees, leaving a glass slipper behind.

The next day, the Prince sets out to find the girl whose foot will fit the slipper. He proclaims that he will marry the girl to whom the slipper belongs. The stepsisters try desperately to fit their feet into the shoe, but their feet are too big. The stepmother attempts hides Cinderella, but her deception is soon discovered. The Prince is thrilled to find Cinderella, and a grand wedding takes place at the palace. The Prince and Cinderella live happily ever after.

Join the cast of Ballet Rincon, guest artists Christopher Everly, Donovan Kennedy, Mark Nichols and Joseph Townsend for this beautiful production of Cinderella on June 3rd and 4th at 7pm at the Vail Theatre of the Arts (10701 Mary Ann Cleveland Way).
