(April 7, 2016, Tucson AZ); The Invisible Theatre's Pastime Players, an award-winning, multi-
disciplinary arts education program for mentally and physically challenged students, started as a
workshop in 1984 and has grown into a national prototype of innovative arts education programming
that focuses on ability rather than disability. Funded in part by Foundation Cariňoso and The David C.
and Lura M. Lovell Foundation, Project Pastime exemplifies the concept that when artists, teachers,
administrators, funding agents, students and parents come together as a community – we really can
make a difference!
The Pastime Players will present "THE ME INSIDE OF ME"
on Tuesday, April 26, 2016, at 7:00 p.m. at Doolen Middle School.
THE ME INSIDE OF ME is an original musical that is presented each spring marking the culmination of the students' year-long instruction in music, drama and dance. Conceived and created by Invisible Theatre's Managing Artistic Director Susan Claassen, Project Pastime is directed by Susan Claassen with associate director Gail Fitzhugh, musical director Rob Boone and choreographer Kathryn Byrnes. The project is centered at Doolen Middle School in the Tucson Unified School District. The Pastime Players receive instruction twice a week from local artists of the Invisible Theatre. While some components of THE ME INSIDE OF ME are repeated in each production, the framework is flexible and allows for individual ensemble members to have their special talents spotlighted. This year's production will feature Shakespeare, The Pizza Song and a version of PETER PAN.
In addition to school performances, the touring group of Project Pastime has performed at the American Association of School Administrators Conference in Orlando, Florida in 2001. Throughout Arizona, they've appeared in such diverse venues as the state legislature, Raytheon Corporation, The City of Hope's National Spirit of Life dinner, the Senior Olympics opening ceremonies, the National Association for Handicapped Riders national conference, an art reception at the Flux Gallery in Plaza Palomino and at the 2013 Gem Show for the National Chinese Jewelry Association. Pastime Players were also honored at the 2002 Volunteers of the Year Awards when they received the Southwest Gas Corporation's "Right from the Start for Children" Award. The award winning documentary, Such Good Friends, chronicling the Pastime Players, premiered at The Loft Cinema on April 26, 2009 and will have an additional screening on May 4, 2016 at noon at The Loft Cinema.
A promotional video of Project Pastime is available. Photo and interview opportunities can be arranged by contacting Susan Claassen at Invisible Theatre – (520) 884-0672.
