UPCOMING FILM EVENTS

Now in its 25th year of bringing independent films to Tucson, the Arizona International Film Festival begins its two week run today on April 14 and ends May 1.  Cinematic works from around the globe will be screened, including a number of lively projects helmed right here in Tucson, such as LUCKY U RANCH, directed by Steve Anderson, OURS IS THE LAND, directed by Frances Causey, and MISFORTUNE, directed by Desmond Devenish.  In addition, they'll screen two films not made locally but which have a Tucson connection: SULTAN OF THE SEA, an experimental short by Tucson native Nickolas Duarte, and OUT OF THE DESERT, a vibrant documentary which follows iconic Tucson bandleader Howe Gelb on a European tour.  Visit AIFF's website for more details.

Hanson Dialogues, a new free series of conversations live on stage with top talents and creators in the film and television industry, debuts this month at the Fox Tucson Theatre, presented by the Hanson Film Institute. The program's inaugural guest will be Latino entrepreneur, film producer, and activist Moctesuma Esparza (THE MILAGRO BEANFIELD WAR, SELENA).  Moderated by Tucson native, Emmy Award winning producer and humorist Peter Murrieta, this one-time-only event will be held on Friday, April 29th in the Fox Tucson Theatre at 7pm.  Visit the Hanson Dialogues website for more info.

I Dream in Widescreen is an annual showcase of BFA Thesis Films which gives Tucson the first chance to see original works from the UA School of Theatre, Film & Television before they travel the world to major international festivals such as Sundance and the Berlin International Film Festival, among others.  This captivating evening of films will take place at Fox Tucson Theatre on Saturday, May 7, at 7:00pm, sponsored by Rica & Harvey Spivack.  Tickets can be purchased at the UA Fine Arts Box or online at tickets.arizona.edu
