Artistic Director Ashley Bowman choreographs the world premiere of Judith, a timeless story of heroism, struggle, power and spirituality. Collaborator and musician Kevin Justus works with Bowman to adapt the ancient story of the "Book of Judith", one of the Apocrypha/Deuterocanonical books of the Bible, dating back to the 2nd century B.C. Known for fusing contemporary movement, acting, and narrative, Artifact tells the tale of a widow (Judith) who goes against the great general Holofernes, commanded by the ruthless King Nebuchadnezzar. The story has been interpreted through famous paintings by artists such as Carvaggio and Gentileschi among many others throughout the centuries. With an expanded development of characters within the story, the adaptation takes an already fictional account of religious history to more detailed and unique places. Artifact's ensemble includes 11 dancers from diverse backgrounds. Dancer Ilaria Guerra takes on the title role of Judith. Marquez Johnson dances the role of Holofernes. Supporting roles include Judith's maidservant, Anna danced by Becky Belanger as well as King Nebuchadnezzar danced by Nathan Myers. Music for the production includes compositions by Michael Nyman and Sergei Prokofiev played live by Tucson's finest musicians. Some of the musical highlights include songs by Nyman sung by mezzo soprano, Korby Myrick. Richard Hereld, Myrick's husband, is on piano. The musical ensemble also includes violins, viola, flute, cello, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn and percussion. Lighting designer Don Fox is known for dramatic and innovative approaches to lighting dance. He will bring a modern yet poignant atmosphere to the ancient story.
