Subject: Ballet Tucson premieres George Balanchine's "Walpurgisnacht Ballet"

As part of the 2017-2018 Fall Concert/Season Opener, Ballet Tucson presents its company premiere of George Balanchine's Walpurgisnacht Ballet - an enduring ballet in the repertoire of New York City Ballet and a joyous dance revelry set to excerpts from Gounod's Faust.  Ballet Tucson's Founding Artistic Director, Mary Beth Cabana has performed many leading roles in Balanchine ballets and is thrilled to have her company of dancers experiences the speed, musicality and abandon of Walpurgisnacht Ballet.  "Dancing in a Balanchine ballet is certainly the highlight of any dancer's professional career.  Now we are able to present these works to our audience here in Tucson and it is truly a dream come true!"

Author and former soloist with the New York City Ballet, Zippora Karz returns to set and coach this ballet.  Ms. Karz is one of a handful of dance professionals entrusted to maintain and pass on the choreography and legacy of "Mr. B."  She worked with the company in 2016 on its successful debut of Serenade.  One of Balanchine's most famous quotes was "Ballet is Woman."  Walpurgisnacht Ballet certainly exemplifies that with a cast of 24 women in soft dresses in shades of purple and only one man engulfed by the women wearing a billowy ivory blouse.

Other works included in the program for Ballet Tucson's 2017 Fall Concert:

Phantom of the Opera – Murder and mayhem are the order of the day at the Paris Opera in Ballet Tucson's wildly popular, original work loosely based on the 1925 silent film.

Paquita Grand Pas Classique – this Spanish style piece infused with bold expression, technical virtuosity, and spirited music by Ludwig Minkus is a cornerstone of classical ballet repertoire.
