TUCSON HIGH MAGNET SCHOOL PERFORMING ARTS PRESENTS

Come Back to the 5 and Dime,

                                  Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean

by Ed Graczyk

Directed by Art Almquist

It’s 1955 in  McCarthy, Texas.  The Disciples of James Dean, a group of teenage girls devoted to the movie icon, are having their regular meeting at the local five and dime.  Mona, fresh from a job as an extra in the Dean film Giant, makes a stunning announcement: she is pregnant with Dean’s child.

Flash forward to the five and dime in 1975, where the girls are arriving for a reunion of the Disciples on the anniversary of Dean’s deathNow middle-aged women, the ladies' reminiscences mingle with flashbacks to their youth; then the arrival of a stunning and momentarily woman sets off a series of confrontations that upset their self-deceptions and expose their well-hidden pain and disappointments.  As the day progresses, the women see that while they may think themselves through with the past, the past isn’t through with them – and truths that have been buried for far too long must be revealed.  Playwright Ed Graczyk makes the McCarthy five and dime  a world full of  drama, comedy, and compassion in this 1976 Off-Broadway classic.
