Some of the kids participating in this week’s Arizona Opera Week admittedly may never have experienced opera. Which makes this outreach effort by the statewide company all the more appealing.
Arizona Opera Week kicked off Tuesday and runs through Sunday, but the highlight — particularly if you’re an opera fan not attending Tucson Unified School District schools — will come on Friday. That’s when the company will mount a truncated version of Donizetti’s “The Elixir of Love” (appropriately dubbed “The Mini Elixir of Love”) at the Fox Tucson Theatre. Admission to the 10:15 a.m. performance is free and the doors will be open to one and all, on a first-come basis.
Arizona Opera Week is presented in cooperation with the opera company, Tucson Unified School District and Tucson Children’s Museum. The company visits TUSD schools and uses hands-on activities to teach youngsters about the all-encompassing art form of opera. The goal is to open children’s minds and ears to music and acting that many have never experienced.
Some of the children in Friday’s audience at the Fox, 17 W. Congress St., will participate in the production.
Opera Week concludes Sunday with Opera in a Box at the Tucson Children’s Museum, 200 S. Sixth Ave., at 1:30 and 2:30 p.m. The interactive program allows children to create their own opera scenes. Arizona Opera will mount Donizetti’s opera in its full length on Jan. 17-18, 2009. For more information on the upcoming season, see Friday’s Accent section.
