Coaching Corner: Monthly Acting Tip

TIP #96: GET A LIFE
(From the book, "101 Tips for Actors")

What's the most interesting thing that you've done today? How about this
week? This month?

What do you do when you're not pursuing your career? Hang out with
friends? Play Scrabble? Go surfing? Take road trips? Believe it or not,
there IS more to life than just acting! Hard to believe, I know, and many
of you will probably disagree with me, but it's the truth.

When the time is right for you to get an agent, at some point in time
during the course of the conversation, the agent you're meeting with will
probably make this statement: "So tell me something about yourself."

Ninety percent of the time, the answer most actors give usually sounds
something like this: "Well, if you take me on as a client, I promise I'll
work really, really hard" or something similar and just as ridiculous!
This is NOT the answer the agent is looking for.
What the agent really wants to know is this: "Who are you as a person?
What do you like to do? Do you have a life outside of your career or will
you be looking for me to entertain you 24/7? Are you someone I can work
with, or are you going to be the type of client who is too high
maintenance to deal with on a regular basis?"

If you're someone who's interesting to talk to, then people will be
interested in talking to you. But, if you're just another run-of-the-mill
actor whose life revolves around nothing more than your last audition,
then it's time for you to make some changes and start to explore the world
around you.
