Before he was an Academy Award winning writer, the London Theatre Critics named Anthony Minghella (The English Patient, The Talented Mr. Ripley) Most Promising Playwright of the Year. Never has that label proven more true than in his unassuming 1980s masterpiece, Cigarettes and Chocolate.
The play centers around a woman named Gemma who one day, suddenly and without explanation, gives up speaking. One by one her stunned and confused friends find themselves ripped from their everyday routine of espresso-drinking and navel-gazing to confront their own culpability—real or imagined—and in doing so, truly seeing each other and themselves, for the first time.
