Downtown gets JAZZED!

The 2nd Annual Downtown Tucson Latin Jazz Festival is Sept. 10 & 11
New York jazz legend Larry Harlow and local dance band Tito Y Su Nuevo Son
are ready to get Tucsonans on their feet

There is a genre of music so energizing that it seduces you to move in your seat, clap your hands, thump your feet and then jump up in a frenzy of dancing. Salsa music is the guilty party.

The Downtown Tucson Latin Jazz Festival returns this year to offer audiences two opportunities to dance with wild abandon. Tucson group Tito Y Su Nuevo Son is the star attraction at the free Salsa Dance Party at La Placita Village on Sept. 10.

And then Tucson welcomes legendary New York jazzman Larry Harlow and the Latin Jazz Encounter who will play the Leo Rich Theatre on Sept. 11.

Sept. 10 at 7:30 pm: The main courtyard at La Placita Village will pulsate with a salsa beat from 7:30-11 pm as Tito Y Su Nuevo Son – familiar to Tucsonans from salsa hot spot Sur Real – plays a FREE dance party. Everyone is invited to dance the night away under the stars in one of Downtown’s most beautiful outdoor spaces. There will be a beer garden featuring cooling brews and margaritas and La Placita Village restaurants will be open for business.

Sept. 11 at 8 pm: Larry Harlow and the Latin Jazz Encounter will fire up the Leo Rich Theatre. Harlow is a true living legend known for his innovative blend of Afro-Cuban and jazz styles of piano playing. Although jazz and the piano styling of Art Tatum were his first love, his exposure as a teenager to the music and culture of the New York Latino community fascinated him and have influenced his music ever since. Harlow has been nominated for three Grammys and in 2008, was presented with a Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

Ernersto Portillo Jr., Arizona Daily Star columnist and host of KXCI’s Latin music show Onda Suave, will emcee the show.

Tickets: General admission tickets for Larry Harlow are $25 through the TCC box office, TucsonJazz.org or by calling 903-1265.
$5 discount for Tucson Jazz Society and Hispanic Chamber members, active duty military and students with ID.
A VIP package, featuring a pre-concert reception with Larry Harlow at Cushing Street Bar & Restaurant and a ticket to the show, is available for $50 per person – call 903-1265.

The Downtown Tucson Latin Jazz Festival is presented by the Tucson Jazz Society, Downtown Tucson Partnership and Tucson Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

The festival is possible through the generous support of Wells Fargo, La Posada Hotel and Bon Boutique.
