Tucson, Arizona--Pima Community College Center for the Arts enthusiastically announces its 2013-2014 Season: “BRAVO!”—an eclectic and lively selection of Pima’s theatre, music and dance performances; gallery exhibits of contemporary works by international, national and regional visual artists; and special events worthy of ovation. The Center for the Arts complex, situated on PCC’s West Campus, consists of the Proscenium Theatre, the Black Box Theatre, the Recital Hall and the Louis Carlos Bernal Gallery.

 

PCC Theatre Arts

THE TRUMPET OF THE SWAN, adapted by Joseph Robinette, based on the book by E.B. White. Directed by Mickey Nugent. October 2-13, in the Proscenium Theatre (Fri. and Sat. at 7 p.m.; Sat. and Sun. at 2 p.m.) ASL interpreters: October 5. Tickets are $8 with discounts for groups of 10 or more. Families will love this courageous, moving story of love, friendship and triumph over a disability. Louis is a trumpeter swan born without the ability to make a sound. Deeply concerned for his son’s well being, Louis’ father steals a trumpet from a music store to give his son a voice. Louis goes out into the world searching for a way to pay back his father’s debts and through his many adventures he overcomes his fear of being different, makes new friends, discovers his talents and falls in love. Family Play Date, a free event for kids and their parents, is Saturday, September 28 at 9-11 a.m. in the Black Box Theatre. Learn more about The Trumpet of the Swan, mingle with the cast and enjoy fun activities, tasty treats and a short preview scene in the big theatre. Scout Theatre Adventure Night, for girl and boy scouts and their leaders is Saturday, October 5 at 7 p.m. The event includes discounted tickets, a stage tour, cast interaction and Q&A session after the play. (School matinee performances are also available for elementary and middle school groups beginning 10/2.)

 

THE LARAMIE PROJECT, by Moisés Kaufman and members of the Tectonic Theatre Project. Directed by Nancy Davis Booth. November 14-24 in the Black Box Theatre (Thu.-Sat. at 7:30 p.m.; Sun. at 2 p.m.) ASL interpreters: November 21. Tickets are $15 with discounts available. In 1998 University of Wyoming gay student Matthew Shepard was kidnapped, beaten and left to die tied to a fence in the outskirts of Laramie, Wyoming. He died 6 days later. The horrific event became a watershed moment in America. The play is a theatrical collage about the reaction of the town people, when in the spotlight of national media, rumors became myth in achingly soul-searching confusion. An open dialogue with the audience, cast and director will follow every performance. 

 

FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, based on Sholem Aleichem stories by special permission of Arnold Perl. Book by Joseph Stein, music by Jerry Bock and lyrics by Sheldon Harnick. Brought to the stage by the creative team of Todd Poelstra, Mickey Nugent, Nancy Davis Booth and Dr. Mark Nelson. February 20-March 2 in the Proscenium Theatre (Wed.-Sat. at 7:30 p.m., Sun. at 2 p.m.) ASL interpreters: February 26. Tickets are $18 with discounts available. A heartwarming musical, set in a small Jewish village in 1905 Russia, revolves around the hardworking, but poor dairyman Tevye, the father of five daughters. He’s a big-hearted patriarch wishing to preserve his traditions and maintain his family while outside influences encroach upon their lives. The musical premiered on Broadway in 1964 and ran for almost 10 years. The initial production won nine Tony Awards. Musical numbers include the memorable favorites Tradition, Matchmaker, Matchmaker, If I Were a Rich Man, Sabbath Prayer, Miracle of Miracles, Do You Love Me?, and Sunrise, Sunset. Opening night, Thursday, February 20 features a Family Gala with contests, prizes and refreshments. (A school matinee performance is available 2/28.)

 

THE MOUSETRAP, a murder-mystery by Agatha Christie. Directed by Mickey Nugent. April 17–27 in the Black Box Theatre (Thu.-Sat. at 7:30 p.m., Sun. at 2 p.m.). ASL interpreters: April 24. Tickets are $15 with discounts available. Eight strangers are trapped together at a manor house in a snowstorm. One of them turns up dead. Who among them is the murderer and who will be the next victim? Christie’s clever and thoroughly entertaining story is a classic who-dunnit with an ingenious plot that engages the audience from start to satisfying finish. The Mousetrap had its world premiere at the Theatre Royal, Nottingham in 1952 and is currently the longest running play in the world.

THE POWER OF FIVE - a male quintet vocal recital featuring faculty Dr. Jonathan Ng, and guests Jose “Chach” Snook, Stephen Warner, Darryl King and Shawn Wilburn. October 6 at 3 p.m. in the Recital Hall. Tickets: $8 with discounts available.

 

Wind Ensemble Concerts – Under the direction of Dr. Mark Nelson featuring classics for full band, as well as small wind and percussion ensembles and soloists. October 24, December 5, March 13 and May 1, at 7:30 p.m. in the Proscenium Theatre. Tickets: $6 with discounts available.

 

Chorale & College Singers Concerts – Under the direction of Dr. Jonathan Ng featuring selections for a large mixed-voice choir and a more select mixed-voice a cappella choir. October 27 at 3 p.m., December 6 at 7:30 p.m., March 11 at 7:30 p.m., May 4 at 3 p.m. in the Proscenium Theatre. Tickets: $6 with discounts available.

 

Jazz Improv Combos Concerts – Under the direction of Mike Kuhn featuring individual combos performing their own set of repertoire with music from early swing numbers through bebop, modern fusion and funk styles. November 25 and April 21, at 7:30 p.m. in the Proscenium Theatre. Tickets: $6 with discounts available.

 

Jazz Ensemble Concerts – Under the direction of Mike Kuhn featuring jazz standards performed from a variety of periods in big band style. December 3 and April 29 at 7:30 p.m. in the Proscenium Theatre. Tickets: $6 with discounts available.

 

Orchestra Concerts - Under the direction of Dr. Alexander Tentser featuring a repertoire for orchestra with high school/college students and community adults. December 7 and May 3, at 3 p.m. in the Proscenium Theatre. Tickets: $6 with discounts available.

PCC Dance

SIGNATURE SELECTIONS. Under the direction of Aurora Gonçalves-Shaner. A contemporary dance concert inspired by movement processes featuring faculty and student works. DANCE FUSION. Under the direction of Aurora Gonçalves-Shaner. The performance melds various dance styles together in a melting pot of dance movements from classical to contemporary styles; intermingling ballet, modern, jazz and more! A vibrant blend of physicality, musicality and passion is demonstrated with innovative choreography and contrasting music.
