Before comic opera ruled the stage, there was the intermezzo. These short examples of comic opera (opera buffa) were performed in between the acts of longer, more formal serious operas (opera seria). Three great composers all wrote intermezzi for their patrons – Haydn for the Esterházys, Gluck for Vienna’s Burgtheater, and Mozart for a competition at the Habsburg court with his rival Salieri. Hear these rarely performed comic gems in their original French, German and Italian.

The production is staged by David Ward, a distinguished basso buffo and stage director who heads up UA Opera Theater, where he staged the highly successful “Die Fledermaus” in the fall of 2013 and "The Magic Flute" in spring 2014. Ward has staged "Tartuffe" and "Le Nozze di Figaro" for the University of Houston’s Moores School of Music, "Falstaff" for Houston’s Opera in the Heights and other productions for Opera in the Ozarks, where he also conceived and directed a young peoples’ touring production.

The Arizona Symphony Orchestra will be conducted by Ace Edewards and Keun Oh, third-year doctoral students, whose musical direction is guided by Dr. Thomas Cockrell.

High School Night at the Opera will once again welcome area junior and senior high school students to the final dress rehearsal on Wednesday, November 12, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. Teachers are encouraged to contact Professor Ward at 520-621-9396, davidward@email.arizona.edu to RSVP for this student event.
