"ON THE ROAD" HAS LOTS OF SURFACE

By Chuck Graham, TucsonStage.com

The earliest Beat poets, writers and free thinkers did not live the Beatnik lifestyle. The term Beatnik wasn’t even known until several years after the Beats had become an established phenomenon of cultural contrarians.

The publication of Jack Kerouac’s “On the Road’ in 1957 was essentially a diary of his travels back and forth across the country with charismatically compulsive Neal Cassady during the late 1940s. Now Brazilian director Walter Salles’ adaptation of “On the Road” is playing at the Loft Cinema 3233 E. Speedway Blvd.

Kerouac was declared incompatible for military service when World War II began, so he served in the merchant marine, hanging around the Columbia University campus (where he had been a student on a football scholarship in 1940) between assignments.

Cassady, who was four years younger, had already been a convicted juvenile delinquent (car theft) by the time he was 18 in 1944.

With the war over, all of American continued to joyfully celebrate the triumphant American Way of Life. Everybody believed this was the greatest country in the world.

There was little understanding of any nonconformists who didn’t want to join the party. They were just a bunch of losers in a land of plenty.

During this time Kerouac was working on drafts of “On the Road,” experimenting with stream-of-consciousness writing. It was the rise of the Beat movement since the early 1950s that led a publisher to finally take a chance publishing “On the Road.” Readers loved it, of course.  Free love, the open road and complete irresponsibility make a heady cocktail.

Unfortunately, all this backstory doesn’t get on the big screen in “On the Road” as Salles has directed it from a script by Jose Rivera (“The Motorcycle Diaries’). Salles and Rivera focus on what is actually in Kerouac’s book, with its late-1940s settings of wide open spaces plus occasional stops in Denver.

Less than three years after Hiroshima there were no Beats shouting down The Man, upsetting proper folk and matching wits with academics who keep insisting big government and corporate America are not the enemy.

What we get is a surprisingly un-magnetic Garrett Hedlund (“Tron: Legacy”) in the Neal Cassady role of Dean Moriarty.  There is none of the electric are-they-or-aren’t-they sexual tension between Dean and Sam Riley in the Jack Kerouac role of Sal Paradise.

We know Kerouac was so completely in thrall to Cassady, we have the books to prove it. But nowhere in this screen version do we see either man hungering after the other. Even more disappointing, this Dean Moriarty doesn’t have the magnetism to be the Pied Piper who could save the best minds of this generation from self-destruction at the hands of lock-step conformity.

One guy who does nail his part is Viggo Mortensen as the rail-thin William S. Burroughs role of Old Bull Lee. Much older than the other Beats, Burroughs saw them only as kindred souls of a sort.

Mortensen gets that. His portrayal keeps plenty of space between his life and those restless Beat searchers who couldn’t begin to name what they were looking for. If only Dean and Sal could have done the same.

PCC Theatre Arts presents THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK

Subject: Compelling and illuminating: Pima Community College Theatre Arts THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK April 11-21

A story that must be retold over and over...

PCC Theatre Arts presents
THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK
April 11-21, 2013
Thu.-Sat. at 7:30 p.m., Sun. at 2 p.m.
ASL interpreters April 18 at 7:30 p.m.
Center for the Arts Black Box Theatre

In 1943 Holland, a 13-year old Jewish girl and her family are forced into hiding to escape deportation to concentration camps by the Nazis. During the two years in hiding, young Anne recorded her thoughts, feelings and the events around her in her now world-famous diary.

Director Nancy Davis Booth has the highest regard for the playwrights Goodrich and Hackett; also known for writing "Father of the Bride," "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers," and "It's a Wonderful Life;" and has chosen to perform their original script rather than the more recent adaptation by Wendy Kesselman. When asked why she chose this play Booth replied, "I was surprised that the students knew so little about The Holocaust and World War II.  It is critical for each generation to know the story and to tell it over and over, for it is in the telling that we remember that which we must never forget. Anne was one small light that extinguished the darkness."

Pima's performances commemorate Holocaust Remembrance Day 2013.
The student cast and crew have been invited to escort survivors in the 2013 Yom Hashoah Commemoration: A Cinematic Tribute to the Holocaust Survivors in Southern Arizona - April 7 at 2 p.m. in the Tucson Jewish Community Center. Free and open to the public.

An open dialogue with the audience, cast and director will follow every performance.

Tickets $15, discounts available

UA's Studio Series presents The Arsonists by Max Frisch

a new translation by Alistair Beaton, directed by Laura Lippman
Adjunct Instructor for the School of Theatre, Film & Television

April 11 - 13 @8pm April 14 @ 2pm

Fires are starting all over the city, but Biedermann can take the heat. He's a well-respected, well-disposed citizen with a loving wife and thriving business so surely a fire can't start under his roof — or can it? When two smooth-talking strangers show up at his door seeking shelter, Biedermann can't deny his civic duty in spite of his simmering suspicions. But when they start filling his attic with oil drums, will Biedermann help them light the fuse? In Alastair Beaton's new translation, this "morality play without a moral" raises many questions and demands the audience members answer for themselves…if they can.

The UA Studio Series is dedicated to supporting the original and contemporary pieces of performance through a `bare essentials' production format that draws primary focus to the artistic and intellectual labor of theatre students. This approach to performance lends itself to creative learning experiences for student artists, thought-provoking experiences for audiences, and occasions for productive dialogue about topics relevant to student populations and the broader Tucson community

Dates & Times: Evenings: April 11 — 13 at 8pm * Matinee: April 14 at 2pm

Place: Harold Dixon Directing Studio, Drama Bldg, Rm #116, on the UA campus

present

39 Steps: An Outrageous Comedy

If you were told that a play about violent murders, espionage, romance, harrowing escapes and national security secrets would be a laugh-a-minute, you would definitely raise your eyebrows. But in The PrimeTime Players next show, "The 39 Steps", that is exactly what happens.

"The 39 Steps" is a wildly popular stage spoof of the classic 1935 Alfred Hitchcock thriller film which played on Broadway for 771 performances until it closed in 2010. In that time the play garnered two Tony Awards - and was nominated for four others. It also received the Drama Desk Award in 2008 for the Unique Theatrical Experience. The play ran off-Broadway for another year and continues to be produced in London's West End and around the world. What makes it so much fun is that a small cast of SaddleBrooke actors will portray over 100 roles! Buy a table so you can sit with your friends and neighbors.

Tim Morsani and Andrea Molberg will be the lead characters on April 16, 18 & 20. Karen Moore and Mike Moore will be the lead characters on April 17, 19, 21. The are also in the opposite performances but in smaller parts.

Cast and crew call, horror short shoot in Marana - females with elderly look

From: Billie Brannock [mailto:bmbranno@earthlink.net]
Sent: Wednesday, March 27, 2013 12:20 PM
Subject: Need actresses/crew for horror short shoot in Marana, May 2013

Dead Coyotes Productions is going for its second horror short production with "Ruthie Jean's Special Recipe" come May, 2013.  Dates we are contemplating to shoot are either May 4/5 or May 11/12 involving day and night scenes.  I'm hoping to include bit shots of all cast/crew to be included on rolling credits so we can all see ourselves in this film.  Scott Taft Jr. (sound), and Philip Walker (camera) are my two main cohorts in this undertaking and will be working side-by-side with me on this production.  This is a script I wrote and will also be directing.  Please spread the word as we are in need of ELDERLY FEMALE ACTRESSES, all races are welcome to audition.  I'm not going to narrow down my options as decisions will be made on acting abilities, screen appeal, and if they can pull off an overall elderly look which is essential for the plot of this film.  I also invite any still photographers (digital only, please), additional experienced crew (grips, gaffers, makeup, SFX, etc.).  Phil is handling all the essential shoot equipment fulfillments and bringing some crew along from Phoenix for the event.  He will make the final decision for who will be on board come D-day.  Auditions with cold readings will be done in advance for actors with Scott and myself.  I'll include standbys in case of an emergency who can work set if not needed.

This gig provides food, drink, DVD copy of film, IMDb credits, and a wrap party at The Loft Theater (which I will arrange later down the road).  Lookie-loos are invited to watch the filming, but I do need advance notice to accommodate numbers.

Some of you are from Twin Brides cast/crew and know me and my past accomplishments.  Others are from Bloody Kisses, the first horror short shoot DCP completed in 2012 and distributed through Amazon.com.  I think everyone knows of my integrity and ability to follow through on completing a film and getting DVDs out to the participants as well as uploading their IMDb credits.

All actor applicants please send resume/head shot to this email addy.  All crew, please submit resumes.  We will be auditioning in April (date given out later).  There will also be rehearsals prior to the shoot in late April on set location.  This will be a lot of fun and should be completed in one weekend, but it will be a long one.  Tired individuals can crash on set as beds will be available.

Feel free to email me if you intend to participate.  I won't turn anyone down.  Even actors not given a role will have the opportunity to work on set and garnish their IMDb credit.

Hope to hear back from you!

Best wishes,

Billie
