Set during the afternoon of a huge protest, THE ALTRUISTS follows a gun-toting soap opera actress, her homeless and philandering lover, a Social Worker who thinks poor people are tedious and brings home male prostitutes when he needs an extra project, a male prostitute, and a gay woman who can't stop having sex with men because "POLITICALLY! I'M A LESBIAN POLITICALLY! ISN'T THAT ENOUGH?" This group of radical social activists learns the hard way that "firebombs don't grow on trees" in this furiously fast-paced black comedy by Nicky Silver.

Directed by Christopher Johnson and featuring Eric Anson, Shanna Brock, Brad Bultman, Dani Dryer and Evan Werner.

"Hilarious…the extravagantly amusing Nicky Silver has written one of his most consistent explosions of dark yet good-natured satire…we are carried aloft on the demented joy of [his] hyperarticulate imagination."

Coming in June …

The Fireside Chats with FDR

June 28, 29, 30 and July 4

On March 12, 1933, Franklin Roosevelt took to the airwaves at the height of the banking crisis to talk to the American people.  His goal was to urge the populace to have faith in the banking system and support his New Deal measures.  This was the first in a series of 30 "Fireside Chats."

The "Fireside Chats" covered topics such as the Declaration of War with Japan, the US economic conditions, the Work Relief Program and the progress of the war.  He used a simple and direct conversational style that connected strongly with the American people.  He continued the "chats" until June 12, 1944.

James Mitchell Gooden has constructed a show based on these "Fireside Chats."  Interwoven with personal anecdotes, he reveals the wit and wisdom of our 32nd president.  The result is a show filled with history, nostalgia, humor and patriotism, perfect fair for the 4th of July weekend.

The Fireside Chats with FDR will run June 28th to June 30th and July 4th at The Comedy Playhouse.  Note that an extra matinee has been added on Thursday July 4th.

Performances will be Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30pm and Sunday afternoon and Thursday afternoon at 3:00pm.   Admission is $18.00 with discounts available for seniors and students.

The Comedy Genius

Of Thubway Tham

In 1918, Johnston McCulley created a character for one of his stories.  He would continue to write stories for this character until the 1960s.

McCulley was a very prolific storyteller.  He wrote hundreds of stories in his career. And, he wrote under many different pennames.  He wrote during the height of the pulp fiction magazines. Pulp fiction magazine stimulated a huge demand for material.

The character McCulley created was a quite unassuming little man. The character was polite, gracious and pleasant to his friends.  The character was also a pickpocket.  He was known to his friends as Thubway Tham.

Thubway Tham lived by his own code of ethics.  He only worked in the New York Subways.  He only worked during rush hour.  And, he only picked one pocket a day.  Thubway Tham also spent his life keeping one step ahead of Detective Craddock.

The Comedy Genius of Thubway Tham features Rebecca Niesen, Drew Kallen and Bruce Bieszki.

The Comedy Genius of Thubway Tham runs July 5th through July 13th.    Admission is $12, with discounts available.

Readers needed for 2013 TADA submissions

From: Sheldon Metz [mailto:thedrektor@gmail.com]
Sent: Sunday, May 26, 2013 6:29 PM
Subject: Readers needed for 2013 TADA submissions

Dear Theatre (and TADA) People:

On Thursday, May 23, the notice went out to four publications announcing the call for TADA's 2013 Play Script Submissions. Somehow, we were published in several East Coast theatre publications down to Florida. Two of this year's finalists came from New York, one from PA, and one from Florida. All of this year's writers have been produced and/or published.

To date, we have 25 submissions. More are coming. Cut off this year is September 1, in our hands.

Last year, we needed 11 people to read 52 scripts. That was narrowed down to nine finalists, read by three different people.  They narrowed it further to the top four. The first was read in May, at the Hotel Congress. We have three more; one each, in June, July and August. At least one of these will be produced next season by TADA!.

One problem in 2012 was not all of the volunteer readers did their job and therefore, put a burden on others at the last minute. Another was the we waited until the deadline date before doling them out, delaying the process.

This year, we'd like to have 10 people to whom I can distribute scripts as the arrive. We need volunteers who know how to evaluate a script as to: relevancy, interest, well-written, size of cast, running time, possible production problems (multi or elaborate sets, extraordinary tech, costume needs, etc.).

We have a form that readers use. It is being redone to make it even simpler. Every line item gets a number 1-10. No writing needed until personal notes at the bottom. The only thing we ask is, if you're submitting a script this year, you're welcome to do so, but please don't volunteer.

I've glanced at the submissions this year. The quality of the writers has improved greatly. If you enjoy reading scripts; if you'd like to see what kinds of plays are being written; if you're looking for a play to Direct, Perform in, Produce, Design,or just see, this is a great opportunity. If you're traveling or on vacation, it'll give you something to do on the back porch, swatting at mosquitoes and drinking a... whatever, this might be for you.

We could use your help. With everyone's help, the Tucson Theatre Community can and will be on the map.

Please let me know ASAP.

"FAST & FURIOUS 6" AT HIGHER RPM

By ChuckGraham@TucsonStage.com

Yes, it is true. Defying not only all the odds but also all the meaningful laws of physics that pertain to automobiles, “Fast & Furious 6” actually is the most entertaining entry in this long-running high octane collection.

Justin Lin, who took over directing the series with “Tokyo Drift” way back in 2006 keeps coming up with new ways to crank up the intensity. He also knows how to continue plumbing the psychological depths of Vin Diesel and Paul Walker playing those lead-foot pals of internal combustion intrigue, Dom Toretto and Brian O’Conner.

Not to mention, pulling the right strings so granite-faced Dwayne (The Rock) Johnson can act tough instead of act ridiculous. When it comes to earning big box office never underestimate the market value of Justin Lin’s directorial skills.

Yes…there is a strong element of the same endearing qualities we love in those Road Runner cartoons with Wile E. Coyote.

But who can resist the rumble of powerful engines enhanced by modern theater sound, the feeling of speed edited right into one incredible car crash after another. There’s lots of side-by-side careening up and down narrow mountain roads, as well.

Sure there is a plot, but…well.

First we find Dom retired and living quite comfortably in the shabby Mediterranean  elegance of the Canary Islands, while Brian is happily becoming a responsible father in Los Angeles.

A quick shift takes us to the European  problems of CIA uberagent Luke Hobbs (Johnson), finding him in need of some world class back-up – as in Dom and Brian with their specialist pals Roman (Tyrese Gibson), Tej (Chris “Ludacris” Bridges), Han (Sung Kang) and Gisele (Gal Gadot).

It does take a little while and several totally amazing automotive antics to get everyone on the same intoxicating lap of energized adrenalin; but once they are the race is on.

Nothing to do but sit down, strap in and shut up. Let these professionals take over the driving so you can enjoy the ride.

"STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS" IS LIVING LARGE

By ChuckGraham@TucsonStage.com

The best news about the briskly energizing “Star Trek Into Darkness” is that director J.J. Abrams will be injecting his own testosterone-driven visuals into reviving the “Star Wars” series in 2015. Abrams’ proven feel for creating battle scenes in outer space is several layers of hyperspace beyond George Lucas.

Abrams has done it twice with “Star Trek.” His 2009 “Star Trek” reboot proved a new generation of imaginative youngsters still wanted to go where no one else has gone before on the big screen. See the IMAX version of “Star Trek Into Darkness” and the screen is even bigger – so is the sound.

Back on the flight deck of the Starship Enterprise are the youthfully obstreperous Capt. James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) and the inscrutably logical Mr. Spock (Zachary Quinto), along with the rest of the 2009 crew giving more depth to their characters for this mission.

Lt. Uhura (Zoe Saldana) becomes braver in expressing her un-logical affection for Spock; inventive engineer Scotty (Simon Pegg) has some terrific one-liners; Bones (Karl Urban) the ship’s medical officer reaches greater levels of frustration; precocious Chekov (Anton Yelchin) has added some bravado to his intelligence; Lt. Sulu (John Cho) finally has a chance to sit in the captain’s chair and fly the ship.

The plot is filled with delicious moral dilemmas and a number of genuine cliffhangers whose resolution leads to even bigger cliffhangers. That legendary “Star Trek” balance of action and humanism is kept center stage.

But that’s just the plot. The real emotional connection is in the battle scenes conceived on such a vast scale they could only occur in the limitless reaches of galactic space. They are never  boring and, somehow, never feel repetitious.

Truly, if you need to do a little extra financial planning to get a couple of tickets for an IMAX screening, do it. You and your companion will be glad you did.

MANY SHADES TO "THE RELUCTANT FUNDAMENTALIST"

By Chuck Graham, TucsonStage.com

Philosophical dilemmas grow thicker than hidden agendas in the fascinating interplay of family loyalties and political objectives in Mira Nair’s thought-provoking “The Reluctant Fundamentalist,” now playing at the Loft Cinema, 3233 E. Speedway Blvd.

Always pursuing some obliquely aimed objective,  this time Nair (“Monsoon Wedding,” Mississippi Masala”) wants to sort out the various allegiances forced into play by the World Trade Center attack of 9/11 and America’s subsequent military adventures in the Middle East.

Her display of tangled strategies propelled by Pakistan’s eye-for-an-eye demand for vengeance become a fascinating emotional pallet – made terrifying by knowing our country’s own military might has been subdued by such Lilliputian forces.

“If this is what it’s like in Lahore, Pakistan, the country’s capitol and most modern (we assume) city, just imagine the hopeless cloud of misunderstanding that befogs U.S. forces in Afghanistan, Iran and Iraq,” is the thought that will keep running through your head.

Nair, as always, tells her story through the faces of friends and family. The film is based on the acclaimed 2007 novel by Mohsin Hamid, which details how Changez an exceptionally bright young Pakistani man who parlays his Ivy League scholarship education into a blazing hot Wall Street career becomes a Muslim extremist after the World Trade Center is attacked in 2001.

Almond-eyed Riz Ahmed plays Changez with astounding confidence, creating a convincing portrayal of a stone-hard finance consultant in a foreign land who actually seems surprised he can give up so much foreign success in order to be proud of his own people, especially his family.

The foil in this piece is Bobby (Liev Schreiber), an American journalist working in Lahore, who is also connected to the CIA. Initially Bobby is at a student café interviewing Changez about his life in the US as a precocious Wall Street genius.

In flashback scenes we see how the high-gloss Manhattan life of Changez abruptly changes after 9/11. He gets harassed at customs, abused by strangers who call him “Osama,” feels suspicion even in his own company.

Gradually the film’s focus changes and becomes a cat-and-mouse conversation between the two men, each admiring the other but also needing to protect their own political interests and personal safety.

"ANGEL'S SHARE" HAS THE LAST LAUGH

By Chuck Graham, TucsonStage.com

Generally, we all like to think that each of us has one special gift which, if we discovered what it is, would make us rich and famous. Or at least famous.

For some it might be recording a song that becomes a rock ’n’ roll classic. For others it could be discovering a scientific link responsible for the evolution of hamsters…..well, you get the idea.

British filmmaker Ken Loach imagines a layabout lad as good natured as he is lacking in curiosity in “The Angel’s Share,” now playing at the Loft Cinema, 3233 E. Speedway Blvd.

This contemporary dash-about-the-Scottish-countryside ends up at a prestigious whiskey distillery where Robbie (Paul Brannigan) discovers he has a natural instinct for sniffing out the subtle differences in fine whiskeys.

Given his lower class lifestyle and education, is there any way he can attain the position for which this particular talent for giving winners the nose will be useful? Well, maybe not directly.

Not even indirectly but the 76-year-old Loach, long noted for his socialist leanings, does make the most of laughing at such an unforgiving  society.

Actually the plot is not the point here. More important is the spirit of these somewhat scruffy folk who have no patience with such a rigid class system. They want change and they want it now.

But first, the movie -- filled with English subtitles (thank goodness) because the accents of these boys-in-burlap are so very thick.

Petulant Robbie, always in trouble with the law, loses his temper once too often in a street brawl, seriously injuring his opponent and going to serious jail, albeit still as an adolescent. Miraculously he is sentenced to 300 hours of community service.

The amply proportioned social worker Harry (an endearing John Henshaw) is in charge of several lads just like Robbie. Patiently the weary Harry leads his batch of bad boys through several projects painting a church, picking up trash and the like.

To help ease the boredom with his job as a social worker, Harry also takes his groups on field trips from time to time. A favorite stop is one of the Scottish highlands’ top whiskey distilleries.

During the tour and in a somewhat patronizing manner, Robbie is asked to sniff a sample of the contents in a barrel being prepared for market. To everyone’s surprise, including his own, Robbie instinctively identifies the most important qualities in this particular barrel of precious liqueur.

Now, Robbie may not know anything about Scotch but he does know an opportunity when he sees one.

The rest of “The Angel’s Share” is a delightful caper about bright if uneducated teens poking holes in the stuffed shirts of arrogant connoisseurs who may have deep pockets but don’t have much nose for Scotland’s bottled treasure.

“The Angel’s Share” won last year’s Grand Jury Prize at Cannes, for its magical tale both gritty and heartwarming. Who could resist drinking a toast right now to such a potent blend.

TOP OF THE LINE: "FAST & FURIOUS 6"

Tucson Alliance of Dramatic Artists (TADA!) CONTINUES TO PRESENT  2012 CONTEST WINNERS THROUGH STAGED THEATRICAL READINGS

In 2012, the new Tucson Alliance of Dramatic Artists, known as TADA!, presented a challenge to writers, nationwide. Submit a new play, never-produced, script; something every theatre hasn’t produced at some time or other. The criteria was that the play had to be relevant. That could mean socially, historically, politically or religiously; just relevant.

Through the course of the year, 52 scripts were submitted, from Maine to Hawaii. Some were humorous some were serious, but they were all apropos. They were subjected to study by some of Tucson’s best writers, directors and actors. The final four were selected.

The June show, Eighteen Fourteen, will be on Thursday, June 20, at 7 p.m.

The July show, Emmett, Down in My Heart, is Thursday, July 18 at 7 p.m.

August's show, Love Conquers is Thursday, August 15 at 7 p.m.

The Christian Way, written by Kris Bauske and directed by John Vornholt, was presented to an enthusiastic audience at the Hotel Congress on Thursday, May 16, the first of the four finalists,. The audience gave their opinions and an interesting talk-back was held. Performers included: Denise Blum, Bree Boyd-Martin, Saralyn Cano, Lillian Delamere, David Sewell and Jared Stokes.

The next reading will be held on Thursday, June 20 at the Hotel Congress. That play is Eight Fourteen, written by Hal Corley Jr. and directed by Esther Alamazon. Actors include: Nicholas A. Filip, Brittney L. Vega, Natalia Alvarado, Armen Sarrafian, Mike Saxon, Paul Barby, Cindy Blue, Angelica Rodenbeck and  Meagan Jones.

Having had a serious breakdown after 9-11, New York City-dweller Henry moves with his wife to Mount Morris, NJ, Henry’s childhood home, seeking solace in the suburbs. Then the great blackout of August 14, 2003 occurs trapping Susannah in NYC and the jobless Henry at home. Eight Fourteen, with deft wit and great insight, examines both the fear engendered by 9-11 and the quiet desperation of men forced out of work by a bad economy.

On July 18, TADA! will present a reading of Emmett, Down in My Heart, written by Clare Coss and directed by Sheldon Metz. Based upon a true event in our history, this incident is the catalyst that made Rosa Parks refuse to move to the back of the bus.

In Emmett, Down in My Heart, two women characters, Emmett Till’s mother, Mamie Till-Mobley and a white teacher, Roanne Taylor, frame the 1955 kidnap, torture, murder of 14-year old Emmett Till in the Mississippi Delta. Roanne is haunted by her silence and confronts her need to take responsibility and speak. Mamie Till-Mobley, through outrage and grief, is transformed from a private citizen to an activist for justice. Her insistence on an open casket sparked the modern civil rights movement.Three months later in Montgomery, Alabama, Rosa Parks said Emmett Till was on her mind when she refused to move to the back of the bus. This reading stars T. Loving, Elizabeth (Carley) Preston, Je Moore, Joan O’Dwyer and Jared Stokes.

The quartet of finalists is complete with the August reading of Love Conquers, written by Sharon Talbot and directed by Vince Flynn. The reading stars: Roxanne Harley, Tony Ekstat, Sydney Flynn, Robyn Austin, Scott Berg and Mark Klugheit.

It’s New York, 1990.  With a dead husband who gave her AIDS on purpose managing her life, and disease eating her up, 50-year-old Diane’s got a choice: cling to the Vodka bottle or allow Richie to shove her towards health.  In this whimsical comedy based on a ditzy woman who made it through the system, Love Conquersfinds drollery in a dread disease.  Diane thrives in New York today, her sense of humor intact.
