For Immediate Release:

Tucson Alliance of Dramatic Artists (TADA!) ANNOUNCES THE WORLD PREMIERE - TADA’S  2012 CONTEST WINNER, EMMETT, DOWN IN MY HEART, THE TRUE STORY OF EMMETT TILL

In 2012, the new Tucson Alliance of Dramatic Artists, known as TADA!, presented a challenge to writers, nationwide - Submit a new play, never-produced, script; something every theatre hasn’t produced at some time or other. The criteria was that the play had to be relevant. That could mean socially, historically, politically or religiously.

Fifty-two scripts were submitted, from Maine to Hawaii. They were read by some of Tucson’s best writers, directors and actors. A final four were selected and readings were held at the Hotel Congress. Audiences voted on the four and selected a winner - Clare Coss’ EMMETT, DOWN IN MY HEART. As the winner, the playwright won a World Premiere of her play, here in Tucson, and a cash prize.

On February 22, TADA! will present The World Premiere of Emmett, Down in My Heart, directed by TADA! Founder and Artistic Director, Sheldon Metz.

In this true story, two women characters, Emmett Till’s mother, Mamie Till-Mobley and a white teacher, Roanne Taylor, frame the 1955 kidnap, torture, murder of 14-year old Emmett Till in the Mississippi Delta. Roanne is haunted by her silence and confronts her need to take responsibility and speak. Mamie Till-Mobley, through outrage and grief, is transformed from a private citizen to an activist for justice. Her insistence on an open casket is considered by many to be the start of the modern Civil Rights Movement. Three months later in Montgomery, Alabama, Rosa Parks said Emmett Till was the catalyst that motivated her when she refused to move to the back of the bus. This deeply moving production stars Carley E. Preston, Joan O’Dwyer, P.J. Peavy, Candace Bean, Seth Fowler, Victor Bowleg and introduces Kendrick Stallings and Andre’ Johnson
