The Sci-Fi Genius

Of H. G. Wells

Begins January 17

In 1895, Herbert George Wells became an overnight sensation with the publication of his first novel. The Time Machine. Often called "The Father of Science Fiction," H. G. was a prolific writer.  For example, in 1916 he published the wildly popular Mr. Brittling Sees It Through. The book told the humorous story of a writer in a small village making his way through World War I.

In 1936, Wells collaborated with Alexander Korda and William Cameron Menzies to create the motion picture, Things to Come.  The films starred Raymond Massey, Ralph Richarson and Cedric Hardwicke, and accurately predicted the coming of World War II.

Though principally known for his science fiction, H. G. Wells wrote in many other genres such as history, politics and social commentary.  His short science fiction stories are filled with whimsy and imagination.

The Big Idea

Coming to

The Comedy Playhouse

January 31

Clayton Hamilton was a Broadway critic.  He had and idea for a play.  He approached A. E. Thomas and The Big Idea is the result of their collaboration.

Richard Howard, a writer desperately needs $22,000. Elaine Foster finds out about his problem and suggests that he write about it.  Richard responds "I can't sell a short story for $22,000."  Elaine answers, "no, but you can sell a play for $22.000 so write a play. "  So, Richard begins to write about his problem .  By the middle of the second act, Richard has written everthing the audience has seen in the play.  From that point on, Richard has trouble sorting fact from fantasy, as the searches for "the Big Idea" that will give his story and his life a happy ending.

The Big Idea was originally produced by Cohan and Harris, (yes, that's George M. Cohan) It was originally titled Wanted: $ 22,000.  It was such a new idea that Broadway critics didn't know what to make of it.  The play broke so many theater conventions, that stodgy New York critics were uncomfortable.  Out of town critics, were more accepting and The Big Idea had a successful run throughout the country.

Over the years, many other plays have broken the very same rules and audiences have come to accept the good-natured pokes at theater convention. The Big Idea stars Paul Hammack and Denise Blum and Bruce Bieszki.

The Big Idea opens January 31st  and continues through March 9th .  Performances are Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30pm and Sunday afternoons at 3:00pm.  Admission is $18.00 with discounts available for seniors and students.
