Tucson, Arizona-- Pima Community College Performing Arts presents the exuberant jukebox musical comedy ALL SHOOK UP inspired by and featuring the songs of Elvis Presley, with book by Joe Dipietro. Enthusiastically brought to the stage by the creative team of Todd Poelstra, director; Mickey Nugent, choreographer; Nancy Davis Booth, music director; and Dr. Mark Nelson, pit orchestra conductor.
This 2005 Broadway musical comedy features energetic dance numbers erupting into a chain reaction of mismatched romances and rebellion. It all happens when a great looking, motorcycling, leather-jacketed, guitar-playing stranger rolls into a 1950s mid-American town turning it upside down with the magic of love and the power of rock ‘n roll. This is Footloose, Grease and Happy Days all rolled into one clever, funny script with more than 24 Elvis hits including Jailhouse Rock, Heartbreak Hotel, Love Me Tender, Don’t Be Cruel, Roustabout and Burning Love. For those who grew up in the 50s and 60s the songs will bring back a flood of memories. But director Poelstra adds, “When you hear the songs you know so well, in the context of this tender and heartwarming story, the lyrics take on a fresh new meaning.”
The play not only invigorates the senses with the music and dancing, it is also a visual delight. The concept for the set designed by Poelstra is misguided magnetic love with a 50s rock ‘n roll concert feel emphasized with multiple moveable levels and lots of specialized lighting effects. Brilliant costumes, designed by Maryann Trombino, complete the visual transformation.
Opening night, Thursday, February 21 features a 50s Rock ‘n Roll Celebration. Patrons dressed in their favorite 50s attire can vie for prizes. Come early and enjoy refreshments and rock ‘n roll music before the show.
The Pima Community College Center for the Arts is located on West Campus at 2202 West Anklam Road, Tucson (just west of downtown). For ticket information contact the box office at 206-6986 or centerforthearts@pima.edu.
A photo call for the media is scheduled for Tues., February 5 at 6 p.m. in the Center for the Arts Proscenium Theatre. Director Todd Poestra is available for interviews: call 520-206-6815 or e-mail tpoelstra@pima.edu .
