Independent Film Arizona's April Call Sheet

From: Independent Film [mailto:independentfilmarizona@gmail.com]
Sent: Sunday, March 30, 2014 11:15 PM
Subject: April Call Sheet

1.  The Arizona International Film Festival.  April 11 -27.  Always wonderful.  A must see for any film fanatic.  The Screening Room, Elliotts on Congress, Crossroads 6.  Alex Italic's Sheltered Love will play on Wednesday, April 16, at 8 PM at the Screening Room (127 East Congress) and Philip Sedgwick's Film Mirage at Zabul Province is playing on Saturday April 12 at 9:30 PM at the Screening Room (127 East Congress).  Both are exceptional.

2.  Independent Film Arizona Sound Meeting.  Tuesday, April 1 at 7 PM at CoLab (17 East Pennington).  As always, the meetings are free to all.  The Sound Meeting will feature a panel discussion featuring experts in location sound, music composition, and sound editing AND will give away $250.00 to the best 1 to 3 minute all sound "love scene." Contestants will perform their drama behind a large white board at the meeting so that the audience will hear the drama but cannot see it.  The best sound skit takes home the cash money -- $250.00.

3.  Gloria at the Loft.  3233 East Speedway.  A wonderful film about a woman seeking companionship at social dance clubs.  A great film.  Beer.  Real butter.  Yes, do it today.

4.  Phoenix Film Festival.  April 3 - 10.  700 East Mayo Boulevard, Harkins 101 Scottsdale.  One of the best festivals in Arizona.   Worth the drive.

5.  Crossroads 6.  4811 East Grant.  The best film that you should have already seen -- but with Crossroads sympathy for the dilly dalliers -- its not too late.  Great film.  Watch it on the big screen for only a few pennies at Crossroads.

6.  Man At The Hotel Door PSA.  An attractive man is standing outside a hotel room door.  An attractive woman is standing in the interior doorway.  It is unclear as to whether the lady is going to invite the gentlemen into her hotel room.  The announcer then states:  The distance from Los Angeles to Phoenix is 372 miles (slightly more than the average Angeleno's daily commute -- but not by much).  Although if you make your next film in Arizona -- we will let you spend the night.  At this point the doorway drama develops and  the man is allowed into the hotel room.  But after a moment a trail of ten men and women carrying camera equipment and lights follow him into the room [reversing the context].  The tag line follows:  If you are not thinking of shooting your next film in Arizona.  RETHINK THAT.  Casting for all roles.  Send e-mail, resume and headshot to Antonella at IndependentFilmArizona@gmail.com

7.  Aphasia Center of Tucson.  The Aphasia Center of Tucson is shooting an advocacy drama on April 3, 4, 5, 10, 11, and 12 and is seeking extras to play party guests and actors to play members of a band.  Shoot times on all days are in the mornings except for April 11 which is an evening shoot.  Title credit and a copy of the film, no monetary compensation.  E-mail Eileen at pobtoon@mindspring.com

8.  Groundwork Promotions.  Special thanks to Stephanie Stean

and Paul Holze at Groundwork Promotions who have just launched a

brand new website for Independent Film Arizona

(independent filmarizona.com).  It's wonderful.  Check it out.

Thanks to Paul and Stephanie!

9.  Independent Film Project.  Check out the Independent Film Project

Phoenix.  The deadline for their independent filmmaker labs (narrative) is

April 4.

10.  IFASA Is Now Independent Film Arizona.  The Independent Film

Association of Southern Arizona (IFASA) is now Independent Film Arizona.

Same great taste, just a few less words to chew on.

If you have an event to announce or a group to promote on Call Sheet, send

an e-mail with the relevant information to Antonella at

SINGING CAVE PEOPLE ARE DANCING, TOO

By Chuck Graham, TucsonStage.com

“Quest of the Cavemen” written and directed by Sean MacArthur continues the growth of the Great American Playhouse in its rookie season as the first full-time theater in Oro Valley.

Building up its old time melodrama traditions, this game cast takes its audience back to the era of cave dwellers – a golden age for all-natural diets, unadulterated by chemical processes and genetic engineering.

The female cavepersons we meet are enlightened, as well. Already we hear Ork (Michael Claridge) pining for the good old days when he could just drag women by the hair into his cave, nice and simple.

But fire is a pretty new idea. When one of these little bands steals a pot of smoke and flames from a more innovative group of underground dwellers wearing animal skins (which wasn’t considered politically incorrect at the time), everyone’s lives are threatened.

Exactly why they are threatened isn’t clear. For while there is a lot of animated gesturing and jumping around onstage, there is difficulty following the plot. Not that it matters too much.

Pianist and music director Mike Padilla cues the house whenever a hero or villain is taking center stage. Vigorous cheering and booing is always encouraged at the GAP. Everyone is guaranteed a happy ending, as well.

And really, though the actors’ motivations may be murky the jokes are pretty good. In this context, puns are a favorite. Often times, the corniest ones get the biggest response.

For example while seeking an oracle’s advice, Rube (Nick Seivert) one of the tribal leaders, learns that “The early bird may get the worm, but it is the second mouse who gets the cheese.”

Maybe you just have to be there.

Time after time, Nancy La Viola’s choreography fills the stage with dancing citizenry of a prehistoric nature. Several song favorites from the 1970s get rousing renditions, too, while a spinning disco ball reflects on the dancing.

Appropriately enough, the after show olio is a “Tribute to Irving Berlin: No Business Like Show Business.” From “Alexander’s Ragtime Band” to “God Bless America” the nine-member cast gives 10 songs a straight-ahead choral treatment that encourages singing along.

“Quest of the Cavemen” continues through June 7 with performances at 7 p.m. Thursdays, 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Fridays, 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. Saturdays, 3 p.m. Sundays, at the Great American Playhouse, suite 110, 13005 N. Oracle Rd.

Tickets are $17.95 adults; $15.95 seniors 60 and over, active military and students; $7.95 children 12 and under. For details and reservations, 520-512-5145, or visit www.greatamericanplayhouse.com

Subject: Help Save Access Tucson (Tucson Community Cable Corporation)

Access Tucson, Public Access Television, is being threaten with extinction, your help is needed to save it  Access Tucson is a most vital resource to protect our First Amendment Rights.  It has, and continues to sustain the vitality and culture of our community.  It's funds do not come from city budgets, but from public contributions and levies on Cox and Comcast Cable Providers.  I've been a part of  its history for 29-1/2 of its 30 year history, and can attest to its value to our community.

Whether or not you have ever used or watched Public Access Television, or currently live in the Tucson Area, you are still a part of  the Access Tucson family.  Let's not let this tried and true Community Resource slip away.  I have signed a petition to Jonathan Rothschild, Tucson Mayor and Members of the Tucson City Council which says:

"For over 30 years, Access Tucson has served the Tucson community at little to no cost, educated thousands of people, and served independent voices and nonprofits alike in a commitment to open, independent media access for residents of our city. The savings presented by the City Manager pale in comparison to the worth of this treasure. Please do not let Access Tucson disappear!"
