CAFÉ BOHEMIA’S READINGS, JAMS AND IDEAS SCHEDULED THROUGHOUT THE SPRING MONTHS IN TUCSON
New Additions: WordUp, ATC Book Club; Second Season of Intermezzo
TUCSON, Ariz. (March 3, 2014): The Spring schedule of Arizona Theatre Company’s (ATC) Café Bohemia includes a satirical look at international surrogacy and a story inspired by Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s masterpiece, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, as well as two new features to complement the third season of monthly readings, jams and ideas.
Currently in its third season, Café Bohemia was founded by ATC Associate Artistic Director Stephen Wrentmore and is curated with ATC Literary Associate Katherine Monberg. Now in Tucson and Phoenix, each monthly play reading is made possible with support from Providence Service Corp., the NEA and the kind support of Emerson and Peggy Knowles.
Scheduled readings include:
• Samsara by Lauren Lee: Tucson, Saturday, March 8 at 9:30 p.m. at The Temple Lounge, 330 S. Scott Ave.
• Albatross, by Matthew Spangler and Benjamin Evett, adapted from The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Tucson: Saturday, April 12, 9:30 p.m. at The Temple Lounge.
A $5 admission is recommended at the door.
ATC’s Intermezzo continues its second season of “shows between the shows” with monthly evenings of prose, poetry and performance live in The Temple Lounge while the ATC mainstage is between productions. Intermezzo is scheduled at 7 p.m. on March 25 and April 29 at The Temple Lounge.
New offerings include WordUp, a fresh opportunity for local playwrights, poets, writers and storytellers to stretch their creative muscles and develop new works with the support of ATC’s professional literary staff. WordUp is scheduled Thursdays at 7:30 p.m. at The Temple Lounge. There is no cost to participate.
The ATC Book Club will launch in partnership with the ATC production of Around the World in 80 Days, March 1-22 at the Temple of Music and Art. Read a book, see a play and join in a discussion led by ATC literary staff in The Temple Lounge. For additional dates and details, contact ATC Literary Associate Katherine Monberg at kmonberg@arizonatheatre.org.
Plays previously showcased at Café Bohemia have gone on to numerous successful productions: Michael Mejias’s Ghetto Babylon, which also was awarded ATC’s 2012 National Latino Playwriting Award, received its world premiere at Off-Broadway’s 59E59 last summer Steve Holiday’s award-winning Savage Bond was produced by Beowulf Alley Theatre Company in Tucson in fall 2013; Kill Shakespeare by Anthony del Col and Conor McCreery has been performed in New York, Chicago, Seattle, California and Dubai; Used to Was (Maybe Did) by Brian Dykstra has had further development work at the Lark Play Development Center, NYC; and The Color of Stars by Dwayne Hartford was produced and toured across Arizona by Childsplay.
